ParticipantHi,
Can someone kindly help?
We have a Smeg Cooker Chimney Extractor that was bought in 2018. Model: KD610XEIt’s now developed an issue where the motor doesn’t seem to work.
– On Setting 1 or lowest suction: When started on this, can hear a whirring sound from motor but doesn’t work.
– Setting 2: When moved upto 2, the noise gets louder but again motor doesnt seem to be working.
– Setting 3: It starts to work but doesn’t sound normal & stops shortly afterwards.
We tend to clean the steel filters but don’t touch the motor, due to which there is lots of grease around the motor.
We had an engineer from a local firm around to look. This was their diagnosis:
“Motor brushes were needed to complete a repair. Unfortunately, upon checking the exploded view and part listing for your specific appliance, the motor brushes are not listed as a separate part to the motor, so we have no option but to quote for the motor assembly.”
Their quote came to more than the original purchase price of the extractor !
I called up official SMEG helpline & the kind lady said that its most likely a control panel fault & the motor won’t need replacing?Agree she hasn’t had a look at it but don’t want to pay for another engineer visit !
I’m a bit confused.
Is it the control panel or the motor ?
In which case, control panel will be cheaper??Can someone kindly help ??[IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:”none”,”data-size”:”full”,”src”:”https://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/forums/core/image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==”}[/IMG2]

ModeratorI find that odd that the local guy said it needed brushes as most cooker hoods are brushless motors, for your model the part is a complete motor if you contact smeg direct they are very helpful and will supply you with part number and price

Keymasterit does sound like a motor issue and it’s a brushless motor so, complete unit in any event and those are not cheap.

Moderatorcan see why your confused when the only advice you get is from a complete idiot
first off try and get at the motor and see if it spins freely
if no you may be able to srip it and add some light oil. not a permanent fix but may give you 12 months or soif it will spin it may have a capacitor and these are often cheapish so worth a try

KeymasterThey don’t show a cap in that one Dave, it’s an older type with the small switches in the switchback.

ParticipantThank you so much for all your help & feedback. Much appreciated. Feel like I should ask for my money back from the local firm as they haven’t even diagnosed the issue correctly (brush motor). I think it might be cheaper to buy another one considering the labour & motor replacement costs !

Moderatoryes its a very expensive motor for some reason. I have got a motor that seems to look identcal but the motor unit inside is different so i can only assume the have fitted a better quality or higher power motor
if it was me i would first take it down and strip it so see if the motor is tight. after all it may need a little oil and it might continue to work for a while
you have nothing to lose as its broken now

ParticipantTried giving it a go as per suggestions here. Is this burnt out ?? Does that mean motor has to be replaced ??

KeymasterNo, that’s not burning just grease etc that’s got on it most likely causing discolouration.

ParticipantYes seems to turn freely, dont think motor is the issue?
We couldnt take out the switch panel.
Also, is this a brush or brushless motor from the picture above ?? We don’t know the difference.

Moderatorno extractor would use a brush motor in this situation
does sound like a shorted coil issue in which case its new motor time
and its a silly price to a lot of the standard hood motors
