    Hi,

We have cheapo Iceland tall freezer in our garage, which we have owned for a number of years. It was badly in need of defrosting which my wife did yesterday.

It seems to be working, in that food is freezing ok but when I close the door I hear a hissing sound (from the back) and the door seal seems to be sucking closed (it takes some force to open the door when it hisses).

Any ideas if this freezer is on its way out ?

We have been running down the food so it was virtually empty to allow defrosting. So we now want to stock it back up again, and I am off to Costco later. But I am concerned that we may spend a lot on food ….. only to for the freezer to stop working and it all be wasted.

    Any ideas much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Steve.

How was it defrosted as if the evaporator was stabbed it will be a write off I’m afraid.

See the defrosting notes in this article for more.

    Thanks for the link.

It was defrosted by putting saucepans of boiling water inside.

If the evaporator is damaged, how long is it likely to be before the freezer stops working ? Its been working ok since it was defrosted for about 40hrs so far.

If it’s freezing then it’ll probably be okay.

    Hi

A hissing sound when closing door is a normal sound , its just the warm air cooling down rapidly causing a vacuum inside freezer. Cold air takes up less space than warm air, it just means you freezer is well sealed from outside air.

AS WASHMAN SAID YOUR FREEZER IS FINE YOU WILL NEED TO LEAVE IT APPROX 10 MINS BEFORE OPENING THE DOOR AFTER CLOSING IT, FOR THE PRESURE TO EQUALIZE, THEN THE DOOR WILL OPEN MORE EASILY.
