ParticipantIm wondering if you can help me as im a bit naive as to how i go about the following. my colleague is making a kitchen island unit for a client (with a stone top) and wants to fit a hob without getting one off the shelf but getting the burners or components (please excuse lack of technical terms, with flexible hose) individually to drop into the stone. Im wondering if you can buy individual hob parts/components or would he have to buy a hob and take it appart? Any pointers as to if this is feasable where to purchase parts etc appreciated. we are a cabinet makers by trade but have a good plumber to carry out any work. Thanks sasha

Yeah I know what you’re trying to achieve, a one piece granite worktop with the burners coming out the stone itself. IT would look nice I’m sure but there are a couple of issues with the idea.
The first is CORGI, I doubt they’d be thrilled by this idea at all, in fact many a CORGI installer or repairer would run a mile from such a thing. 😕
The second is you’d have to buy all the bits seperately and that won’t be cheap, most likely at least double the price of a hob, so you’d be cheaper to buy one and strip it down, not that I can tell you that’s an adviseable route in any way.
The next is you’d have to have some way of securing the pot stands, which I’m guessing would mean grooves in the granite that will need finished. The danger there for the company carrying this out is that, should a pot spill on someone as the pan stands were not secure enough, who caries the liability?
Then to cap it all, there would be absolutely no warranty of any kind from any manufacturer I know of for that kind of modification.
Sorry, when it comes to gas appliances safety is absolutely critical.

Thank you for your quick reply and pointers on the safety aspects which are as you say are most important. I will pass the info on. My colleagues are interested in trying new things and have a good stone supplier so the top can have any recesses required but will highlight the liability factor. The plumber may have considered the corgi aspects but I havent spoken to him yet, will pass on your info as im sure it will be very valuable and they may have 🙂 some more questions! Thanks again sasha 🙂
