I got a phone call from an oven cleaning firm saying that he cleaned the oven yesterday and now it was not working. He was worried that he killed the oven so he asked for my opinion. I hate it when I get called out for my opinion as I do not want to get caught in cross-fire between the cleaning firm and the paying customer.

I had a look at the oven, it’s a ten years old double white oven, it has better days but mind you it was the cleanest oven I have ever seen! The client says the clock has been broken all along and never affected the performance of the oven. There is power to the oven via the controls but it appears to have not reached to the oven lamps, motor and elements. Initially I thought it was the selector switch but this oven does not have this. The system appears to set up that it operates via a clock/timer (it’s mechanical – the flip clock thingy) and I can’t seem to get any readings from one end of the timer to the other ie. wires from the controls to timer and wires from timer to elements as there’s no connection even when fiddling the timer about. The wires from the knobs appears to be in working order but from the timer to (i think) elements I am stuck there.

Couldn’t get to the elements for this reason I couldn’t take the oven out completely as it was too heavy and my work bench is too high. I needed a 70cm high bench, so made myself a mental note to buy a work bench and cut it down to 70cm!

Maybe the cleaning firm finished off the broken timer which was broken all along or tripped the fuses somewhere although I can’t see that’s happening as the cleaning temperature is a lot lower than the oven heat so it’s unlikely for other safety devices to cut off. The guy who cleans it does this same job twice a year with no problem at all.

The oven in question is 10 years old, how do I approach this with the cleaning firm who called me out to fix the oven? They want to know who is responsible for it.

don’t know what you mean by automatic.

Now I realised what you mean. The timer is set at manual in the shape of a hand or some kind of heat symbol – still no change.

The oven cleaning man agreed to come out to pull the oven out for ease of access. Hopefully I should check every wires for connections.

I saw some threads on thermocouple – where is this normally found?

No model number to hand as there’s no markings on it – I am getting concerned due to the lack of parts available for repairs other than elements.

Returned to the Homark Oven, rather hard to track down the faults.

One of the grill element has low insulation, so I am replacing it in the hope that it would restore the power back to the oven.

Hi mate it really does sound like the clock is set to auto. i had one last week that had me stumped , even though it was set to manual i found that i still had to set the clock by pushing and pulling the different knobs and resetting the clock… you could also just try by passing the clock all together? hth DJ

Will let you know how I got on. As for by passing the clock, it’s not something I would do as it could compromise the safety of the oven unless I am wrong. I could do with a wiring diagrams so I can figure out how to by-pass it and not compromise the safety though in theory.

I don’t really like the oven as it’s so old and greasy!

Bypassing the clock shouldn’t compromise the safety , its only there as a timer for automated cooking etc. The safety cutouts are there for that reason.

ApplianceMan – TBH – I wouldn’t know where to bypass.

I have the photo of the oven, would it help if I send you the photo. It won’t be the wires just the front of the oven, see if you do recognise it? If you do, then perhaps PM me on how to bypass it? The clock/timer is mechanical with the flip number thingy like a very old clock radio before the LCD display.

Yea send me a photo , it does sound like a very old one. If you can get a few photos of the inside i could prob. work it out…… possibly lol
