Have had an issue with the fridge for a while where it forms a thick layer of ice to the back face of the fridge compartment. Have turned the thermostat down to what is the lowest setting to cure the problem over the years. It now builds ice quickly, fridge seems very cold and compressor can be heard running very often. Freezer section ok.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a classic insulation failure and if so, the machine is scrap in practical terms, there’s nothing you can really do with it.
