ParticipantBelieve it or not I’ve never replaced a timer on one of these machines because no one I’ve encountered has been prepared to pay the cost and have all scrapped the machine or gone to Hoover under the 5-year parts guarantee.
However, I’ve come across a scrapper that someone wants me to repair and the reported fault was that there was a flash underneath.
I’ve inspected the machine (it’s one of the Candy-type) and it simply goes straight into a spin whenever the motor is powered up. On wash, it’s not pausing after the normal wash time and so the spin is continuous.
The motor seems OK and meggers out Ok too. The tacho magnet is on and the tacho coil is giving a reading. I presume it’s the timer but the reported flash underneath concerns me.
Is this constant spinning a common fault on these?

PITA these Candy clones, motors are failing at an alarming rate and taking out the timers.
But if the motor appears to be Ok, then maybe the flash was caused by spillage on to the motor or pump from the drum spinning full of water ?

Cheers for the reply. Is it when the motors are going down to earth or the armatures shorting out?
The motor does run ok

Armatures normally but it’s pretty obvious when they go, raised segment is the normal one, or a dead short across it.

Andy,
Double check the motor plug connectors, especially the tacho leads.
I have had this model with the tacho leads close to the motor plug break off!!!. Then of course it suddenly leaps into spin, and the flash is simply the carbons blasting into fast spin!!!
Look carefully at the module off course but I reckon it is tacho based????

Would that cause the motor to spin continuously even on wash? Normally when I used to get tacho faults on the old Hoover’s it would spin for 15 seconds, then stop, then spin for 15 seconds etc. In other words the motor only spun when the timer gave it power. This one seems to spin indefinitely as soon as F1 level is activated.

No! I guess in that case it is Timer/module Unit based (or connections to it of course?)
You are correct in thinking that during wash it would at least pause between tumble phases, so it must be the timer I reckon.

Get one from EMW, and if it blows up again you can send it back just for a fiver or so handling charge. They are in the web links section.

I decided it would most probably require just a timer but wasn’t prepared to take the risk of it blowing again. As it happens, as soon as i mentioned the cost of the timer (trade price) he jumped in and said he might as well buy a new one. For personal reasons, I was going to fix it for no labour and cost price of part but even that’s not good enough these days!

Andy,
Why don’t you get a recon Timer from EMW (see web links) That way if it does blow up for whatever reason, you’ll be covered. No point in turning into a charity, although for peace of mind you obviously what to get to the bottom of the problem. We all have have those jobs to suss out!!
Keep us informed whatever, best of luck!

I had a look there but didn’t see one for this model. The machine is at the tip now.
