Hoover AM120 Washing Mc

Got to go to one of these on Sat. Customer says it fills, agitates and then stops. Trys putting it on spin and then spins a bit then stops.

Apart from the obvious (brushes, tacho etc), possibly motor on timer or low insulation heater ?. Any known common faults

Sound like an o/c tacho circuit. If the ‘agitate’ is above normal wash speed (customer may have ommited this).

I would take a tacho coil with me as they do tend to fail on these motors for some reason.

yer sounds like the similar sort of fault that we get on the wma Hotpoint range with open circuit tacho coil, couple of spins then nothing.

You know what these customers descriptions are like over the phone.

Relay contact burnt out on module :tup:

Exact symptoms in this case Steve (trust me?) so take your soldering iron and a bit of solder. (Change the brushes whilst you’re there 😉 )

Thanks guys for input,

Even more stumped now, changed board, still the same, everything checks out ok. Have brought machine back to workshop for further head scratching session ❓

Hi Steve

Check the drum rotation speed on wash to see if tacho circuit is OK. If too fast then try to check continuity of the tacho circuit across the two connections on the module plug (easy to get at and checks out the complete circuit in one go)(one of the two sets of pads for the motor plug that has thin tracks coming off them is the tacho – not sure which – the other is probably the thermistor). If the coil and magnet are ok then it might be a connection problem.

If the tacho circuit checks out ok, you have tried in a known good module and the connectors all fit tightly then its down to eliminating componants like NTC thermistor, heater, wiring continuity etc. A pain in the bum. The problem with these is there are no fault codes (that i know of) so if the program aborts its a needle in the haystack job.

Forgot to say:- On machines like these that have the module at the top of the machine with easy access, it is worth familiarising yourself with where the individual wires on the plugs go to ie. thermistor, tacho, field coil, armature etc . This means that you can check out a lot of circuits for continuity directly from the module plug. This has a big advantage in that you are ‘seeing’ what the module ‘sees’ so the whole circuit is checked in one go – wiring, connectors the lot! Usually – due to the heavy current – most heater circuits terminate in their own socket on the board rather than using an edge connector.

Yer checked drum rotation speed, fine. so implies tacho circuit Connections all look o.k but will have to meter them out I think. Edge connectors on pcb were a bit corroded but cleaned them up and now look ok.

Your right it will be a needle in a haystack poke and hope job me thinks. Still its nice to get these faults every now and then to keep you on ya toes (reminds me of of indesit days when they first came out).

Have give me old mate Keith a bell to pick his brains (Hoover engineer) .

Appears to imply a broken/loose wire somewhere, dont ya just luv these faults 👿 will post outcome.

yep – they can be a pain. There’s you, trying to think the problem through and you got this huge orifice in the background spewing forth all maner of pointless drivel. And every now and then you have to mutter something that you just hope is relevent to what they said.

Yep, why don’t they just go away and only come back when it’s time to pay the bill? 🙂 Or better still just leave a signed cheque for you to write out for yourself when you’re done. It was reading a similar thread on here which led me to choose my sign in name.
