Re: my Hotpoint condensor dryer model DYC 8913B

I had an E15 error a while back which I posted on here:

    http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/forumsphpbb3/hotpoint-consensor-dryer-e15-runs-for-while-then-stops-t96888.html

After checking various things, I ended up unplugging some input plugs to the board whilst the machine was running and after an E15 error or two more, the problem resolved itself: the machine runs fine and no error E15. If it was a corrupted programme then perhaps getting it to run a full cycle reset things? I dunno

Anyway, I’ve a problem cropped up which see’s the drum stall either from a cold start or when changing direction mid-cycle. The drum goes to turn, you get a hummm sound from (presumably) the stalled motor. I overrode the doorswitch temporarily and find that if the drum stops to change direction and I hear the hummm, I open the door and give the drumblades a slight shove, then the drums takes off, I close the door and things run fine. Until the next direction change upon which, sometimes, a stall.

It doesn’t stall every time but clearly, if left unattended, the motor/board would burn out under stall load.

    Any ideas?

Heck, if I could just override the direction change during cycle, I’d be able to give it a shove at the start of the cycle (if you do that with the door lock not overridden, shut the door quickly and press start it often takes off fine)

    Replace the motor capacitor πŸ˜‰

Aha! Thanks a mil. The machine looks very boxed in so a chance to test my theory that a new hatch can easily be created with a thin blade angle grinder.

Re: Hotpoint consensor dryer: drum motor occasionally stalli

Time to do this capacitor work….

However, the only model number I can access on the in-situ machine is the basic one (DYC 8913B) – not it’s subset variants. As such, I can’t identify the exact capacitor used.

For various reasons (laziness / distance to hump the machine to a place where I can work on it / and the need to keep the machine operable) it’s not practical to pull the machine out to ID the capacitor.

The following strikes as the way to go:

    1. Buy capacitors of a few different ratings – they are cheap.

    2. Take out the machine and cut a hatch in the sidewall to access the capacitor directly

    3. Identify the capacitor rating from the old one and replace with a new one.

    Questions:

    1. Does anyone know which capacitor ratings a ca. 4 year old Hoover condensor dryer might be expected to use? Say I buy 4 or 5 to cover the likely range of possibilities..

    2. What happens if you use a capacitor of the wrong rating (e.g. I buy a 7 and 8mf and it turns out a 9mf is used and I haven’t got one)

    Thanks for any info,

    Auntie

Re: Hotpoint consensor dryer: drum motor occasionally stalli

Thanks for clarifying the model number Auntie. Now we know that and the fact it’s a Hoover and not a Hotpoint, you need to purchase a 7UF (micro-microfarad) capacitor. Bit of a swine to fit but at least by buying one you’re well on the way to fixing it. πŸ™‚

    Good luck

    😳 😳

The last piece of junk I had (before this piece of junk) was a Hotpoint. Hotpoint must have imprinted it’s junkiness into me ‘ead.

I’m hoping a neat access hole cut in the sidewall of the dryer will make fitting a cinch (or less of a pain)

Last question: if the replacement capacitor has 4 spade connectors and the original (presumably) has two, which pair do I use?

horizontal pair (flat spade next to flat spade)

vertical pair (flat spade above flat spade)

    Thanks for the direction-giving

    Auntie.

Re: Hotpoint consensor dryer: drum motor occasionally stalli

if you start cutting holes in the side of a dryer you need to be darned sure that no wiring or plumbing is on the other side. plus the fact you then have sharp metal to contend with. Not a good idea in my books

access to this part is through the front. if you take the front off and the front bearing assembly you can prop up the drum and access with one arm. bit tight but an be done

cap wiring The new one has 2 sets of terminals in a “U” shape so hold cap to make them look like two front teeth and they are the ones you use

I like your style Auntie. We in the trade should (perhaps?) consider such a direct approach to simple repair solutions such as this. πŸ˜†

Re: Hotpoint consensor dryer: drum motor occasionally stalli

    have had this before Martin

had a customer years ago, cut 2 holes in a hotpoint 95 series to access the top nuts on the shocks, got quite a shock when I was asked to check the machine and found 2 holes 6in by 8 either side
well he was a cook on a ship and I could imagine them doing that on ships lol

Re: Hotpoint consensor dryer: drum motor occasionally stalli

Don’t replace with 7uf capacitor that’s why it’s failed use a 8uf capacitor this is a easy job and Hoover actually list a replacement capacitor as a 8uf. Lid off 3 screws holding lid front control panel off 2 screws door off 2 screws 4 screw around door seal then there’s 2 at the top of the front panel and 2 at the bottom point to the top of dryer off with front panel careful as there are 2 black wire to the door lock then there’s just the front duct to remove 4 7mm screws and then you should be able to get to the capacitor on the right hand side simples

You can access it just by removing the front air inlet grate.
Remove the fan & fan cowl too.

Pretty straightforward when you’ve done half a dozen.

No good if you’ve got fat forearms!!

Belated thanks for the advice given after I’d hared off with my angle grinder.

Angle grinder it was – guesstimated the location of the hole spot on > careful use of a 1mm disc on a 4″ grinder (only going deep enough to cut through the metal and minimizing metal dust entering the machine). I left two small bits of metal uncut to act as hinges. Folded the “door” open, changed part, folded shut and done.

Now for my latest problem with this machine. See new thread.
