ParticipantWe’ve been quite pleased with this machine which is 54 weeks old. Did a wash today, quite a heavy load probably near the 8kg maximum, and when my wife opened the door after the wash a thin, wispy light grey ‘smoke/mist’ came out of the drum. Stuck my head inside the drum and it smelt to me like a rubbery smell rather than an electrical smell.
Emptied the machine and took the back off to inspect, clean as whistle and looked as though it had never been used. Pushed/pulled the drum belt and it was quite secure and not rubbing. Inspected all the electrical connectors and all ok. No sign of any electrical burning or overheating. I am a retired electronics engineer and am quite familiar with the smell of hot/overheated electrical components etc – there was no smell at all. Put all the panels back and stuck my head inside the drum again and all I could smell was the residual rubber smell – no smell around the exterior of the machine at all.
Did another wash with a light load and no problems or smells encountered at all.
Would be grateful for any further thoughts or advice for the forum experts. Regards, yt.

Clothing has got caught on the grey rubber seal and the lip of the seal has got friction damage against the drum. Look for a burnt rubber groove on the inside lip of the door seal.

Thanks for your reply. Not too sure where to look. I have now looked at the edge of the rubber seal where it directly abuts against the rotating drum – I pulled it back so I could see. Nothing obviously burnt or ridged, it actually looked in good nick. I did see a few ‘bits of rubber’ about the size of large pin heads in and around the seal area so I hoovered them out. When I did the test of the machine I had all the panels off and could see around and the inside the carcase etc – I could see no water so hopefully any rubber seal damage was minimal.
Do you think I am looking in the right area?

Apart from clothing stuck between drum and seal (usually caused by overloading ) this problem can also be caused by a broken inner drum support spigot, if that is the case then it will tend to be noisy on spin with heavy loads and the inner drum will appear to be a little off centre.
A very common occurrence if constant low temperature washes are used, especially combined with liquid detergents and soft water areas. If that is the case then it is BER.

Yes exactly so, the tiny balls of rubber confirms my earlier diagnosis. An unfortunate result of overloading no doubt.
(As it is just 1 year old a broken drum spigot is highly unlikely)

It looked like 54 months on my phone screen with my contact lenses in ( just played squash) 🙂
That said I have had two Bosch machines less than 3 years old with drum supports failed last week.:(May 14, 2016 at 10:55 am #436950yellowtriumph

Not sure what the post above from ‘iadom’ is about?
Apologies for not replying sooner. Since my original postings the machine has now performed a reasonable number of washes with no further problems. So, it does look as though the overloading of the drum may have resulted in the clothes getting trapped around the rubber seal areas. Thank you for your very helpful replies.
