ParticipantBother (and other such negatives)
Town had two power cuts of 2 and 3 hours, after which our Hoover (non frost free) fridge freezer HCA390K did not resume perfect working order. It is about 2 years old, defrosted once and kept clean with no apparent gunk in the fridge drain hole. The fridge is running at about 8 degrees and the freezer at around -3 (thermometer reading from second shelf down) and the dial set to 3, as always.
Decided to defrost it (only a bit of build up of ice on the top shelf) last night but having put it back on again this morning (8am) and reading it this afternoon (2pm) it is working no better, or worse, than last night.
Other details are R600a, Type CM39, Class N.
Large metal lump at bottom/back of appliance (compressor/motor?) feels hot.I am hoping that this information is enough but please let me know if there is something I have missed. Had a quick check on the repairs link but there are no repair services in my area.
Looking forward to your reply.

Is the compressor (Large metal lump at bottom/back of appliance (compressor/motor?) running constantly Charlie ?
It sounds like a system fault to me, compressor failure, gas shortage if it is 🙁

Yes, seems to be running all the time – at least I haven’t heard it clunk itself off like it used to and it is on whenever I go into the kitchen.
Any other checks or procedures I can do or is it the hefty cheque to a serviceman for me?
(Give my regards to Exeter – lived there for 12 years and part of me still does).
Cheers,
Charlie

There’s little more you can check I’m afraid.
Try Repairs@ for an engineer who can give a more definite diagnosis for you 🙂
Regards sent to Exeter for you also 😉

😕 Got an engineer out who, on initially feeling tubes at the back, said the appliance was doing what it should be doing. But the compressor was undeniably very hot and the freezer unit was still well above temperature.
He decided that we should change the compressor (and to R134 gas as there seem to be many complaints about the r600 gas). So we did.
😡 Freezer still running at around -3, fridge still around 6. Tried putting the dial lower but not alteration to internal temperatures. Appliance does cut out now though.
Any ideas? And would they have to sort it out for free now as their diagnosis was incorrect?
Worried,
Charlie

Yes, they should call back free of charge. It’s either a mis-diagnosis or the system has become blocked by the sound of it.
Odd that it cuts out though as this indicates the fridge in theory should be cold enough. Assuming it is the thermostat that is cutting the compressor out of course.

I had checked the temperature when it wasn’t running. After it had run for a while the temperature read -15 in the freezer. Maybe it will go lower.
But it shouldn’t be losing that much coldness though surely (back to -3)?I am now monitoring it with a max min thermometer and will post results after a while (not sure how often it will go on and off). And I will try not to look too often to reduce warm air going in.
Cheers

OK. Fridge running at around +6, varying little cos lots of stuff in it I suppose. Freezer completely empty but thermometer put in second drawer down (of 4 drawers) and registered high of -17 and low of -5. And that was overnight without me opening the doors at all.
Not well methinks.

Nope, that’s not good.
Call the guys back in that case 🙂
