Hoover HDV6 Tumble Dryer, Grinding Noise

Hi all, im looking for a little help with my tumble dryer. I had a load in earlier when from nowhere it started making a grinding/clicking noise, something like someone drilling through the wall, so I immediately switched it off.

I have taken the top off to see if maybe the belt had broken but it had not it is very tight infact as it probably should be. I attempted to take the front off as well to get at the bottom workings but could get in there without knowing what I was doing. I noticed a fine black dust everywhere, kind of looked like ground down rubber all over the bottom of the machine. The drum still turns but makes the noise when you do so (manually turned as its unplugged)

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong ?? Many Thanks.

Standard fault with these was the rear bearing collapsing, allowing the drum to drop and run against ducting beneath.

Repair involves an entire replacement drum and bearing assembly.

sounds expensive. Would I be better off getting someone private to look at this or paying hoover the £89 call out fee. its only 18 months old so im just out of the parts and labour warranty 🙁

If it is the drum kit required which is quite likely they are in the region of £100 just for the part I’m afraid 🙁

Try the repairs@ link below for an engineer locally who should be able to check for you if it has failed or not 🙂

Ive taken it down the local indepdent engineers shop, they offer a free quote of whats wrong/how much to fix the appliance if you take it to them yourself. So its a wait and see.

The Hoover machines usually have a free 5-year parts guarantee, so the only fee you should have to pay is the call-out and labour charge.

Only if the user registers the product direct with Hoover (most people don’t bother for some reason 😕 )

Yeh I did register with hoover, but the callout fee seemed a little steep.

Had a phonecall back from the local shop today, they said they have found the fault and that the motor has gone, coming in at over £100 to fix and replace.

Suddenly the £90 hoover fee doesnt look so bad, or should I just stump up £150 for a new one 🙁

Motor faults are not common with this appliance – 98{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} probability that the rear tub / bearing / shaft has failed. If you call Hoover they have the spares on the van and if it is deemed a motor problem – that will be replaced with a 12 month guarantee. There is no limit to the number of spares that they can fit to attain a succesful repair 8)

took a trip down makro today, the 6kg same tumble dryer i have now but a newer model of course was just £99, may as well get a new one instead of paying £90 for a repair. I might get a condensing one instead though, £50 more but no venting as I always had trouble with the other ones hose. There any advantages of one over the other apart from the need to vent ???
