Our 2 year old Hoover washing machine won’t drain (error code E03). The pump doesn’t sound like it switches on at the point it’s supposed to, but when we took it out of the machine and tested it, it runs absolutely fine.

Just in case, we checked the filter (fine), the pipes leading to and from the pump (completely clear).
Any thoughts on the next thing to check?
To check whether power is going to the pump when it’s supposed to (when the machine is running) will be a bit of a hassle, but if this needs to be done to distinguish one potential cause from another, we’ll give it a go. Or is it likely to be the control board and we should just replace that?

    Any advice very welcome…

If the pump runs when directly connected to the supply, it’s fine. For the record, we do not recommend any sort of live testing – people die…

Using a test meter set for continuity, check the resistance of the pump (150-230ohms depending on type) at the pump, then at the pcb end of the loom. If you have a very similar reading at the pcb end, the pcb is almost certainly at fault – a visual inspection may well reveal that the relevant triac has blown.

If this is the case, a replacement pcb will be required (unless you’re an electronics whizz) – we would advise changing the pump motor at the same time, regardless.
