ParticipantWe have a Hoover HNMF2605A-80 frost free fridge freezer bought on 08/02/06. It is still chilling and freezing, but the freezer compartment is frosting up and it is quite noisy. The noise seems to come from the air circulation panel in the back of the freezer compartment and it sounds like a small motor that is struggling to run.
I don’t want to start stripping it down until I have a fair idea of what I am likely to find when I do and what parts I am likely to need.
Your expert assistance would be appreciated.

Martin Wood

Hi Martin,
Behind the rear cover will be the freezer evaporator and the motor you hear will be the fan motor.
There’s a basic fault finding guide here for frost free fridge freezers that will help you understand how they work in some ways and the faults.
Then there’s this guide to frost free fridges which tells you more in depth how they work. They all work on the same basic principles.
On that machine though this thermistor is a fairly common cause of over-freezing although the control PCBs are also known to fail on occasion.

Thanks for that. I have had a look behind the recirculation panel and there was a good deal of ice built up around the fan and a plug of ice in the drain hole. I defrosted it and put it back together and the noise disappeared, although I think that it is gradually returning as the ice builds up again. I thought that I would have a go at replacing the thermistor, since this is the cheapaest item to start with, but I note that this device is ‘foamed’ in and needs to be re-foamed. Could you please advise me what this foam comprises and where I can purchase it.

Hi Martin,
The fridge thermistor is here.
If emory serves it comes with some instructions but I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure on that as some do, some don’t. But if you ask Dave on spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk when you buy one he can try to dig them or similar out for you which, while they’re never brilliant, do give you a good steer.

Hi,
I purchased the themistor, as suggested and I asked, when placing the order if any fitting instructions were available.
The thermistor arrived without any instructions, so I contacted the spares email address and they just suggested that I return to the forum with any questions.
My main question is this: I understand that the thermistor is ‘foamed in’, but where exactly is it located? I have removed all the internal plastic panels from inside the freezer compartment and I can see no sign of it. I can find the fan, the heat exchanger, the heating element and the thermal cut out, but of the thermistor there is no sign. The only thing I can think of is that it is actually located between the inner and outer skins of the freezer. If this is the case then I think I shall abandon the project fork out for a new appliance.
If I was absolutely certain that the thermistor is the source of the problem, I may be tempted to a undertake major strip down, but there is a limit to the amount of work I am prepared to do on a speculative whim.
Your advice would be welcome.
