ParticipantThere was washing in the machine that the good lady told me hadn’t spun properly. I’d thought I heard a noise when it was spinning, and had initially thought it was a zip/button clicking on the door as it did, but assumed after her comment that the filter had blocked. I checked this and found 1 x 20p coin, a hair-clip, and two small pieces of glass (and now idea where they can have come from or how they managed to get in the machine).
Anyway, once removed I expected normal service to be resumed but sadly not. The water pumps away, but it is the drum not turning that is the issue, I have now discovered.
I took the washer outside (it being a wonderful day) and could look all round the machine and after a study of the patently obvious, realised that the belt was fine, and there appeared to be no obvious (ie visible) sign of damage to the motor. In frustration I prodded the drum pulley witht the rubber torch I had in my hand. Hey Presto, a flicker of life, but momentary only.
Cautious not to lose a digit or several I prodded the pulley again, and this time noticed an arc from the general area of the motor.a couple more prods and the same occured, but the drum would not be persuaded to run by itself at.
So, before I can prove to my good lady that I am The Great Incompetent she believes she marries, are there any suggestions as to what this might be and is it worth a repair? We are due to have the kitchen knocked down and extended in a matter of a few short weeks, and were thinking about renewing all appliances at that time, so major repair work doesn’t strike me as a sensible move, but then again, neither does the cultivation of a pile of dirty school and work clothes.
Thanks in anticipation of much-needed words of comfort and assitance.

The motor brushes are probably worn out – easiest way to check is to remove the motor (2 bolts). The brushes are inside the black cartridges on the back of the motor. Remove the cartridges (marking their positions) and if the carbon brushes themselves are very short, then they require replacement.
Contact Spares@ with the full model and serial number to obtain the correct replacement parts.Power off when investigating. Keep safe. :plug:

I’m in work at the moment, and about to try and sort out the brushes, but I don’t have the serial number with me. Will this stop me from getting the right parts?
Thanks,
Gerry

Hoover / Candy fitted 2 types of motor to that range of machines – P40 and P55 variants. The serial number can help if the manufacturers parts identification software shows that they used both these motors at different times during production; it also helps in the case of a superceded part.
The brushes, as it happens, are identical on both motors – asking for all available information is just a precaution. 😉Steve.
