Hoover HSW 150M overheating

Hi, been a lurker and you’ve saved me £’s but first time I’ve needed to post on this fantastic forum 😉 , but I’d appreciate your help…

The condenser dryer has stopped working and is keeps blowing cold air. There are two reset switches on this machine and the front one (one near the dial) keeps popping out. I’m guessing at a thermostat problem, but I don’t want to start replacing parts that are ok if I don’t have to!

Any suggestions ?

Can you give me the PRODUCT NUMBER of your machine (on the serial number plate – begins 3???????)

As I can find no reference to the model number you gave 😕

I thinks it’s 31000549 0348 0677.

It’s a Hoover 1500 Special Edition washer dryer. Bought nearly 2 years ago.

It’s more likely to be a build up of fluff around the fan and/or ducting. It restricts the flow of air causing overheat in the element chamber.

Power off when checking please :zap: or you may want to ask an engineer to carry out the repair for you, Repairs@ should provide one 🙂

Cheers Dave but it’s all been taken apart and is clear.

The main worry I have is that when the tumble dryer is turned off by the main dial and not the dryer dial, the fan stops but the element doesn’t!!!

I’ve had the voltage checked and using the on/off button & the dryer dial and it cuts off correctly, which wouldn’t explain why after a normal run it starts blowing cold air, unless it’s a thermostat problem.

Does that sound about right?

Ah, main timer problem problem then possibly. Given the high price of the part (circa £60) I would suggest the engineer approach in all honesty 😉

I have had one of these where the front stat was faulty, it kept tripping. I substituted a Hotpoint WD 185° 1600870 one shot device as a test and when this worked Dave did supply the part number and it has been fine since I fitted the new stat.

Hi Iadom, thanks for your reply, I’m not sure the front stat is faulty?

While the machine was within warranty it did a similar thing and it was the fan that had stuck/slipped off the bolt, engineer came and re-tightened the fan, put some locktite on has been fine (on the few occasions that we’ve needed a dryer) since.

It’s Sod’s law that when the weather turns, that it packs up and I’ve got a 2yr old and a 4yr old that need clothes like nothing else!!!

The fan still turns freely, so I’m only guessing that it’s overheating – and it is getting very hot!!! – because of the thermostat, not regulating the element, surely the stat is doing it’s job by cutting out?

Do not mistake the thermostat (no button) for the cut-outs (reset button). When you say that it’s all been stripped, have you removed and cleaned out the small black hose at the bottom of the condenser blower housing? It’s insignificant to look at, but crucial to the machine’s operation.

Just found the thread in the trade section, it was a re-setable stat with blue writing on it, kept tripping even though I could find no other faults, after running for a week without problems with the Hotpoint TOC, I fitted a new 91213520 TOC and it has been fine for several months now. There are a few different TOC’s so you need the numbers/ ratings and colour of writing to identify.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I think Penguin45 has hit the nail on the head!

Removed the back panel and the small right angled hose and proceeded to remove a 4″ slug of goo 😯

Have cleaned the rest on the condenser piping and the first tumble test worked. Didn’t cut out after a few mins.

No doubt it’ll be fully tested over the next few days, so fingers crossed.
