    Hi,

My good lady told me a couple of days ago that the Hoover HW120M Washer dryer would not spin. This happened once before a couple of years ago and I replaced the carbon Brushes and all was fine. So this time I thought, it will be the Brushes again so I replaced them yesterday after finding the old ones worn down.

The problem is that the machine works and goes through the cycle no problems BUT the spin just seems to be on tick over. It never speeds up at all and just rotates slowly.

    Any ideas please?

    Cheers

    Re: Hoover HW120M

This one will be really awkward to diagnose as there is a little timer unit (cheap) and a computer board (expensive) – either one can cause problems. The one thing that you can check easily is whether or not the water level control system is working correctly. If the machine thinks that it is full of water, it will not spin and may just idle over as you have described.

Power off before sticking fingers in………

    Cheers for that.

Whats the easiest way to check these things?

I’m not likely to stick my fingers in unless its been unplugged for 10 mins at least.
    😀

    Thanks

Air bell on the rear of the tub is connected to a diaphragm switch by an air hose. Air bell can choke and strangle the movement of air, or the switch itself can fail.

have you got a load in it if so try it empty, if the load is unbalanced it will not spin but go through at tumble speed.
also check there is no spin cancel option selected, i cant remember if this machine has one or not.

It is the same both when loaded and when its unloaded.

I took the motor off again yesterday and when you spin it the carbon brushes seem to be catching as the rotor turns and it makes like a loud ticking noise. I thought it sounded louder than normal when the machine was running. Do you think the motor is goosed?

    Re: Hoover HW120M

if you look closely at the motor, the part which turns is called the armature, the part of the armature which the brushes run against is called the commutator, i am sorry if you already know this.
the commutator consists of small rectangular segments which should all look more or less exactly the same in shape and colour, if one or more are raised its knackered and a new motor is required.
    plug out obviously.

    Thanks for that.

I did look at that part when I had the motor off to see if thats why it was making the noise but they all seemed to be the same height with nothing obviously wrong with it.

My mother had a Candy-based Hoover washing machine after the ‘New Wave’ (that’s mentioned in another post), but before your model.

It washed fine but its spin became erratic: sometimes it span fine, other times it failed totally, or wavered up and down.

I had a look at the machine. The combination mechanical timer/computer board was knackered: at least one component was charred. The motor commutator was also badly worn.

It was decided that a new machine be purchased. She chose Bosch.

i bet you didnt know you had logged onto bosch website.
i would call out an engineer to get a look at it ,before we dig another hole in the ground to put a not very old, probably repairable washing machine in.

Of course, being the world Hoover expert, you might like to contribute to solving the OP’s actual problem………?

Which is well over £80 list price before labour. Hoover ( Candy) used to supply armatures, tachos etc for these motors. No longer I’m afraid, brushes or motor, nowt else is available.
