    Hi,

I bought a fridge two years ago just for use really at Xmas. It seemed fine in the first year, but last Xmas I had problems with the temperaure. It seemed to get warm inside at times and then things would freeze at others. I bought myself a probe thermometer and set max temp 6deg and stuck the probe on top shelf and closed door and put gauge on front of the door. The alarm would often go off saying it had gone above the 6 deg I adjusted it to 8 deg and every now and again it would go off. I also noticed that it would often go below 0 deg. I had tried various settings on the thermostat but it made little or no change. Food would either become frozen, or become warm which seems to me to be incorrect. I have just called in Hoover to repair it and they replaced the thermostat. He said I should have left the fridge on so he could see it. I also asked what the running temp of the fridge should be and he sid 9 deg is fine. I said I thought all cold food should be stored below 4 deg. I have left the fridge running and the probe thermometer is set for max of 8 deg before alarm goes off and this seems to often happen. The door has not been opened when this goes off. Is this right? I am worried about using this fridge in case food goes off. Last year I wasted a load of food and money. I know it is my own fault for buying Hoover…should have stuck with Hotpoint!!!

    Help please.

Do I need to call them out again…or is it normal

    What model is it?

Run temperature will depend on what you set it to but it should be between about +2?C and +5/6?C normally.

Also, where it is and the ambient room temperature can affect it as well.

And, Hotpoint are not really any better.

It is in the kitchen. I haven’t changed the setting of the thermostat inside the fridge. But the temperature range that my thermometer reads is sometimes 2 deg and at other times 8 deg. It just seems to me to be such a vast range.

At the moment my thermometer (which I read from outside the fridge) is showing that the fridge on the top shelf is at 4 deg. About four hours ago my thermometers alarm went off because the top shelf had reached 8deg. Before I went to bed it was reading 2 deg. During all this time I had not opened the door. I have not changed the setting inside, but I can if it will improve the max temp, but my fear is that it will start to freeze things again. This fridge has already cost me a lot of food last year. Namely an £18 gammon joint was rancid, and a load of other food. I always thought food is meant to be kept below 4deg.

Re: Hoover Larder Fridge – Running Temperature

    That’s a serial number, not a model. 😉

The temperature from top to bottom will differ in a falling air fridge, which is what I want to check because, cold air falls. So it will be cooler at the bottom, warmer at the top and there can be a fair bit of difference depending on the setup.

To get a more stable temperature you need an air driven fridge which is much more expensive normally.

To get still more temperature stability you have to go to better stats, seals and so on and the cost rises again.

To get pukka commercial grade food storage and maintained temperatures you’re into commercial products or prices which most people will not pay and, to be honest, they really shouldn’t need unless there is a specific requirement such as the storage of medicines and suchlike.

You do get problems with the food you put in them as well though, some supermarkets aren’t exactly taking great care I’ve heard.

Try HFLE 5485W None of the numbers on the back say anything against them what so ever. It is only used as a christmas fridge for extra space really…but the last thing I want is to put food in it and it goes off. 8 deg to store food just sounds high. I have got a big Hotpoint Fridge Freezer which has far better temperatures than this small fridge. If I turn the thrmostat down..things start to freeze. It wasn’t by any shape or form the cheapest household fridge I could get.

It is a basic falling air freestanding under-counter fridge so, it’s not gonna be brilliant.

8?C is a bit high but, the stat is near the top. Check that the light goes out when you press the switch in, that can be an issue.

Re: Hoover Larder Fridge – Running Temperature

A better way to test the temperature is to have a glass or cup of water in the fridge and take the temperature of the water.

This will give you a more accurate temperature of any food kept in the fridge.

A domestic fridge should keep the food temperature between + 4 and + 6 degrees C

If the glass of water is above 6 degrees C then it is not safe to trust the fridge.

Make sure you leave the glass of water in the fridge for 24 hours before you carry out the testing of the water temperature then try every 2 hours to see if the temperature of the water has changed as the temperature of the water should remain stable.

I will do that to see if the temperature is okay. My old fashioned fridge thermometer says it is above 4 deg and so does my modern prob.e digitial thermometer…but we shall see

Re: Hoover Larder Fridge – Running Temperature

Well they came and fitted a new thermostat….and guess what it is crap in one word. Yet again this fridge is useless. Sometimes the temp goes up 8 deg, then it will remain at 3 deg then it will drop to below zero and the it will please it self at what temp it is going to run at…some times food gets frozen, whilst other times it gets warm..not impressed with it at all. It is Xmas and I need the fridge… I think HOOVER is the worst fridge I have ever bought in my life and certainly would NOT recommend anybody buy one.
