ParticipantAs some of you may know, our Hoover New Wave has been overheating, which we still havent fixed, but running a cold wash is fine. But recently, it seems to make an ‘arcing’ scraping sort of sound as it revolves, and is distinctly audible when running up to spin. I thought it was the seal being scraped but the noise still appears when no clothes are inside.
Is it the motor arcing?

Could be motor brushes failing or possibly a bra wire in between the drums. 😉

Could the noises be suggesting that the motor is on the way out?

Set machine to spin and start it. Turn out the lights and squint under front edge of machine. You’ll soon see whether or not it’s arcing.

Okay just a update on our tough old bird 😉 which suprisingly has only needed a few door seals, brushes and a new pump in 17 years, but to the point, I think it is on its last legs, as when it is de-accelerating, it makes a loud scraping sort of sound, could it just be the brushes or is it time for a new one? 😕

First produced in 1993 according to my old and battered Hoover Product Data manuals, making it a mere 14 years old, should be good for another few years yet if the bearings are OK. 😉

Yes, I think that is right actually, my parents bought it when I was toddling, I believe. According to my knowledge, they’ve always had Hoover products, I can’t remember the other one, but it had a brown control panel, and a chrome rim around the door, with the dial you have to push in or pull out for the programme to start.
Yes it is 14 years old, thanks Iadom, but suprises me just how long it has lasted with only a few mere spare parts, of course every machine eventually through its life needs brushes, belts and door seals replacing, apart from the Indesits of course, which don’t have much of a life. 😉
I stil don’t know what the problem is, I tried Penguins idea, but cant see no arcing. As far as I know, it has never needed a new motor, axle or bearings, so I cant see it needing any now.
I still dont know why it makes the loud noises when its slowing down, is that normal or is it a fault?December 19, 2007 at 4:25 pm #228704adamhornsby

At the weekend, we thought we had cracked our overheating problem. The machine successfully completed a 2 wash without any problems whatsoever. I try it today, and about an hour in, it starts draining, and all the lights start flashing, opened the door, and the water didn’t seem boiling, but about 60 which it should of been. While it were flashing, i could not do anything with it, so i turned it off with the button, and when i switched it on, the ‘extra rinse’ light came on, and the machine started taking in water.
What is it doing and why?

The programming is probably corrupted. Possibly by electrical interference from the motor (I think that was one of the reasons given in the Hoover Service Data Book).
Best thing to do with this machine is scrap it.
As to your parents’ previous machine, it might have been a Hoover ‘Electronic 1100’, A3110.
