ParticipantWell….I checked the motor as suggested and it was very, very stiff. After a few turns, the spindle seemed to free up and turn in both directions. I plugged the unit back in and (after a quick belt because I forgot to put the capacitor back in and caught my hand on one of the trailing contacts :x) the motor spun happily, the heater heated and the timer timed.
Whilst I was waiting to check the motor would reverse correctly I noticed that the heater had gone off. And then the electric tripped in the whole house. 😡 It turned out one of the tiny contacts to one of the front panel LEDs had fallen out and made contact with the chassis. Which then electrocuted me when the power came back on!
Anyway, everything seems to be spinning now, I just need to check the heater is working and then I’ll put the whole lot back together.
Watch this space…!

ParticipantGood news! The secondary problem (after the pulley wheels which were totally dead) seems to be a stiff motor. A liberal dose of WD40 on the parts of the motor spindle I could reach seems to have done the trick – the wife even has a load of drying on at the moment.
I have also isolated the source of the noise from the machine – that too is the motor. I suspect that means the motor probably is on the way out – can someone do me a price please?
Thanks to all for their advice and encouragement!

Motor for this appliance is p/no 09200471. spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will give you a price and get one if you wish to go ahead.
Future readers of this thread should note that there are safety issues with this repair. Wiring problems have given our OP a shock, and the appliance has been run in a dis-assembled state. We cannot suggest that this is best practice. These machines are built in such a way that most repairs are a pain in the behind, but re-assembly and safety procedures must be observed at all times.

Well. The motor jammed again (permanently this time) and I got majorly annoyed with the machine. Bearing in mind the time and effort I have spent on this beast I have since replaced it with a 9KG Hoover with sensor drying. Hopefully this will last another few years anyway!

I cannot believe you went out and bought another Candy dryer 😯
There are far better products on the market, in or around the same price bracket.
