Participanthi, our washing machine has started playing up, it never completes a cycle just keeps trying to spin. it gets up to a certain speed then cuts out and then restarts the spin cycle.
i found today if i set the spin speed to zero then it will complete the wash cycle and end properly. then when i set it to a spin cycle the same problem happens. i thought maybe the out of balance protection but we have had this machine for years in the same place so dont see how it could suddenly start to be unstable? is there a chance its the brushes?October 26, 2013 at 1:01 pm #403445electrofix

out of balance is the load in the drum and has nothing to do with where the machine is
brushes could be going but they will be sparking and you will be able to hear it if you listen hard with no washing in
i would check filter for blockages and try with no washing in first to see if it will spin.
small loads are more likely to fail spin due to being unbalanced

hi electrofix. it started to refuse point blank to spin, it would kick in and turn an 1/8th then stop. i took the motor out and had a look at the brushes and plenty length on them. i gave them a blow out and cleaned the comm and put back together and its now spinning again but back to the cutting out and restarting, the speed builds up then it switches off, all lights go out then it comes back on with a clunk and starts the cycle over again. this will go on all day if left. doesnt matter if a load in or not. could it be the mechanical timer or is the motor kaput?

it managed to a 600 spin empty right to the end a couple of times but now it is back to just starting to turn then machine cuts out and tries again. does this for as long as you leave it. is there a way to test the motor?

well under further examination i realised that it wasnt going on to the rinse cycle either. as machine is spinning up at end of wash cycle it cuts out and does the drain spin etc. when switching off and selecting rinse cycle it goes on and then goes onto the drain then spin but same happens when it gets to the end of the spin cycle. i found a two pence piece in the rubber hose between drum and pump and noticed a dent on the inner drum, obviously caused by the coin. does it look like the drum is faulty and going out of balance as its whenever it tries to get to a high spin it cuts out and restarts that cycle?

well i have finally come to the conclusion the machine is possessed! sometimes it will rinse only the once, sometimes twice, sometimes after first rinse it only pumps out water for 2 secs then goes onto try and spin. time to bite bullet and buy a new one i reckon 🙁

FWIW I’m researching a similar fault with a Hoover Nextra HNWF6165-88S (“5+5 Wash’n Dry”). The fault sounds the same. Another post at hnf3157-hoover-nextra-spin-related-faults-t75341-15.html seems very similar too – they largely fixed it by changing the programme selector (“timer control switch”/”motorised timer”).
Hopefully that will work for me too! Just making this post as a pointer for other people searching on the same issue.

It hasn’t worked. Still broken.

have had a similar problem on a Zanussi ended up it was the power supply on the programmer board. it was ok on wash but the extra power needed to spin lowered the voltage on the board till it crashed then recovered and repeated

That sounds about right Dave, so is that likely to be dodgy caps – is there a way I can test this just using the board (I’ve dismembered the machine now and got another one to try and get working!)?
