ParticipantWhat looks like rust marks on towels/clothes, ranging in size from very small to 25mm across.
Bearings absolutely fine.
Have taken out heater looked inside tub, shiny clean nothing at all in there, also checked filter and sump, nothing.
Can’t be bolts rusting on spider to drum as s/steel rivets. 🙁
Customer seems to think the marks appear during the wash. The young lady lives on her own, machine looks like new inside and out.
The marks have only appeared in the last couple of months.Any suggestions please. 😕

This is going to be a drum out job by the sounds of it.
I would say it can only really be the bearing seal at fault allowing some grease/gunk to enter the drum.

Taking the drum out on this beast is no mean feat really. If you’re sure the bearings are fine (best stick a couple of wet bath towels in and run on fast spin to be sure 😉 )
…..Then the only other light I could shed on this problem might be gunge coming from the dryer ducting, especially if the customer only uses the dryer ‘occasionally’? Check and clean the ducting, door boot entry point and have a look at the blower fan unit too!

check in the folds of the door seal for rust marks. Even it the cause of the marks has been removed, the rust can still migrate.
I would file this in the rather you than me file. 😕December 10, 2004 at 10:28 pm #121275Electricmalc

Thanks for the replies to my question.
It seems so strange that there is no evidence of rust marks within the tub and drum of the machine, including the folds of the door boot.
With the amount of marks on the towels, (must be at least ten on each) I felt sure I would find some residue within the machine. The drier duct did come to mind while at the house, although made of aluminium, the heaters within could possibly rust, especially as the drier may not be in frequent use. Will have to find out.
Will get back to customer and explain the situation. I don’t mind stripping down the machine IF I find the cause.

ParticipantBra wire trapped under heater therefore no noise is always a good bet.

If the dispenser hose has a U bend in it, check nothing metal has been “posted” through the dispenser. Had something like this on a Candy turbo 21 once and only discovered it when re fittig the tub after replacing the backplate. We were not happy that day

After all the checks you’ve done, to my mind the contamination can only have been introduced with the laundry…did it only happen on one wash? Very complex chemistry can happen when other chemicals such as beauty products are mixed with detergent products (which in themselves are a mixture of very many chemicals) to produce all sorts of effects including staining.

Shot in the dark time.
She couldn’t be underdosing the detergent could she.
Dirt off the clothes re-settling and not being flushed away properly.
Also if theres any use of a petroleum jelly / vaseline (be careful how you ask this one 😳 ), as that can cause some weirdies, especially with door boots.

Looks like I need to ask her some questions 😳
Although the cooker jobs that have come in over the weekend will probably come first, as we fast approach Christmas.
And two of these have obviously not just developed the fault over the last few days. Like an old Neff BI double oven with both doors off, customer took them off to attend to the hinges, unsuccessfully, a couple of months ago. Expensive, but it won’t cook the bird without doors ! 😉
