ParticipantHi,
I am new to this forum, and would like to firstly say hi, and possibly ask for some advice. Not an expert in washing machines, as you can probably tell. 🙂
I have been looking at a problem with our WS136-00 Washer/Dryer for a couple of days now. Started off as a weird knocking noise coming from the left bottom side when the drum was spinning on drying and washing. Initially though a coin had got trapped in the drain pump, but nothing was in there or in the surrounding pipes.
So took the back off, mains off initially, for a better look. Took the drain pump off to clean and double check for blockages. Nothing there so refitted. Leaving the back off and being extremely careful with the mains, I switched it back on again and saw the sound was actually coming from the motor and was accompanied by some arcing sparks coming from the spindle end of the motor, accompanied by a mild burning smell. At this point the motor appeared to be spinning as expected, bar the noises and arcs.
Again being aware of the mains, I switched off all power, and disconnected and removed the motor to check the brushes. They both seem to be making full contact and cannot see any obvious signs of damage to the copper core with which they make contact. However, gave it a good clean out to remove carbon with a toothbrush and kitchen roll.
Reattached brushes, reconnected the motor as before, bolted two nuts back on, and refitted the drum band. Switched it on and the thing now seems like a beast possessed. The motor spins randomly from slow to fast and back to slow again whilst testing it with a dry cycle.
Anyone any ideas why it should start to do this? The noise and sparks seem to have gone, but to be honest, I have not left it on long enough to fully validate this as the machine has developed a psychotic spin so I have switched it off and turned here for more info.
Not an expert, but I guessing the capacitor may now well be playing up as well or the motor is knacked. Anyone one with prior experience of this problem?
Thanks.

The ‘Tacho Generator’ on the back of the motor is at fault here! 😉
Thats the small coil with 2 wires going to it at the opposite end to the drive pulley. Either the coil is open circuit or the 2 wire connection in the motor plug are broken? (Test for continuity with a Multi Meter) 😉

Ok, thanks for that. I was about to arrange a call out visit as Tacho Generators lie outside of the boundaries of my technical comfort zone. 🙂
But the psycho tendancies of the machine seem to have stopped now. The motor speed and rotation are now as expected. The motor noise also seems to have stopped, arc sparks gone, as has the burning smell. Had it running for 30+ mins and everything seems to be normal. Might have been because I cleaned the motor or something, I don’t know.
The final drain outlet pump is still making a bit of racket, but the motor now appears fine. I feel confident enough to deal with one, but thanks for your swift advice. 🙂
