Well lets just say that if the mains filter was split or leaking, that would be my guess as to the source of the burning smell. 😉
From the photo of the module it looks OK but that does not mean that it is not faulty, re motor, It looks OK but again only close, hands on examination would reveal any problems.
If this work was done by an official GIAS service engineer, then I would suggest that you contact a reputable independent next time.
Jim.

iadom: Thanks for your helpful reply 🙂 It is much appreciated!
Despite the slightly dodgy circumstances, I guess it is best for me to give the GIAS engineer the benefit of the doubt this time round- the washing machine is working fine now with some sort of warranty, and so one can’t complain too much! Will definitely be considering a reputable independent next time!
p/s: I did try and get in touch with someone via the repairs@ page on UK Whitegoods a few weeks ago, but alas no one actually got in touch even after a week, and I couldn’t find a direct number to call and contact the recommended local company (via Google/YellowPages and BT’s directory) and say that they were found through UK Whitegoods. Perhaps this detail could be added in the future if possible please?
p/s2: The mains filter didn’t have any split or leak as far as I could tell (from afar) but there was some black around the connections.

What area/postcode do you live in?
Jim.
