When washed clothes smell “off” – like they were washed in stagnant water. We have cleaned all the pipes leading into and out of the washing machine with no success.

My wife has now cleaned it with a limescale tablet and it was ok for a few days – but now smelling again. A couple more Tabs and OK – until a few days later – and so on!

I reckon some water is sitting in the machine after each wash which starts to go stagnant. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I suspect its the way you have plumbed the appliance into the waste.

all washing machines should be fitted with its own waste pipe and trap assembly and the waste from the washing machine should be a max 6-10 inches into this down pipe to stop any syphoning back into the appliance.

another option is to carry out a boil wash at least once a week to kill bacteria which will grow faster now that the new powders dont carry any bleaches or phosphates which used to keep most of the appliances clean during normal use.

If you live in the south east this is a problem we see every day.
40 deg washes do not disolve the soap powders properly mixed with comfort it smells putrid.
Remove the clothes immediateley after a wash,and as was advised do a boil wash but use a cup of washing soda with a bad machine this may need 3 in a row, it also seems to be more of a problem with plastic drums
