ParticipantIs it safe to assume if i’m smelling a burning smell from my Hoover washing machine and the drum’s stopped turning then the motor’s burnt out? The burning smell reminds me of the old Scalextric set me and my brother had as kids if that helps any. It was making an alarming loud clicking noise on top of that and tripped the circuit breaker. It was in the middle of a service wash when it broke, managed to get it to drain but then it started making that clicking noise again so I turned it off. Probably a pointless question I know, just looking to get some expert opinion before I start shopping for a new one, I know the Hoover Six series is supposed to have been crap anyway.

If you turn the drum by hand and can hear a rhythmic clicking in time with the motion, the armature (the revolving part of the motor) will have lfted a segment on the commutator (the copper strips where the brushes run). As soon as the motor gets above wash speed, the brushes will start to bounce off the commutator, arc and generate huge amounts of heat. As there are no parts for the motor, it’s scrap.
If you are considering relacement rather than repair, THIS is an excellent choice – and it doesn’t use a brush motor 😀 .

It wasn’t making a clicking noise as described when turning the drum manually, I decided to put it through a quick rinse cycle to see if it would start clicking again….and the bloody thing started turning properly, far as I can tell it’s working normally again though the spin’s developed a horrible high pitched squealing noise.
Any suggestions what could have gone wrong to cause that acrid burning smell and tripping the circuit breaker in the first place? Could it just simply have overheated considering it was going through a service wash at 90 degrees? Does the high pitched squeal that’s developed on spin suggest the motor may well be on its way out?
As for new washing machines….i’m a single currently unemployed bloke who does one wash a week if that, my budget’s probably £200 tops, one of those Hotpoint WML520P machines from Comet will do me fine I suspect if it comes to that.

really and the wml520p will be the best machine in the world.
its probably a motor bearing gone on your machine take the belt off and see if the motor turns freely by hand in both directions.
plug out first.
its worth the price of a new motor or if its under 5 years old get hoover to fix it under the 5 year parts guarantee.

dont make me laugh
buy a motor, itll outrun that hotpoint 5 fold
or, of course, while youre looking at price why dont you go for one of them cheap haiers, theyre REAL quality, and with you bein a single bloke, youll be able to let your washing build up while your waiting for the motor/pcb to come in stock, thats if the bearings dont collapse first
you really need to take a step back, and take some good advice

Point taken guys, new motor seems the most sensible option if it comes to that. I’ll get the pros to sort it, not really comfortable enough in my mechanical ability to open it up and take a look never mind replace the motor myself. Hypothetically speaking though, would replacing the main motor in this particular model be a straightforward task?

Participantyup
plug out
back off
two bolts, take motor off
refit motor and belt

its quite an easy taskJuly 28, 2008 at 7:50 pm #258513 -
