Hi, I have a Hoover VHD 8142-80 washing machine that has stopped working.

It fills with water but only intermittently drains and most recently I have had to manually drain it. Even when it has managed to drain recently I could hear the pump running on even after it was empty and as a result it would not start spinning. It gives an error code- 3 flashes of Time saver and 800 followed by a pause. I thought initially that it might be an element problem but it does heat the water and disconnecting the live and neutral to the element does not help. I have cleaned out the filter and it is free draining from the main outlet at the back. The pump sounds noisy like a compressor but I can see from the filter slot that the pump is spinning.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks,

    Lloyd

If the pump impeller is loose (faulty) then under load it may not be moving or moving as it should so, poor draining.

Thanks for your reply, I have sat through a cycle and the problem occurred at the end of the drain cycle. The pump managed to completely empty the water but it could be heard continuing to run for around 5 minutes and would not continue on to the next step of the cycle. It then threw up the same error message? Why would the pump not stop running?

I have read that a faulty heater can cause a prolonged drain cycle. But could this still be the case if it managed to heat the water and if the fault still occurred when the heater was disconnected?

    Thanks

I know there’s issues with those heaters that throw up weird faults but I’m not sure on it to be honest.

Only thing you can do is test it for earth leakage as that’d be the probable reason for it being faulty.

Error code 3 always comes up if the drain out time exceeds 4.5 minutes. It also comes up if the heater has an earth leak. But by disconnecting the feeds to the heater has proved, for the most part at least, that the heater is sound. Therefore the conclusion is that that noisy pump you have is clapped out and needs replacing. Though checking the sump hose and the pump outlet hose for potential restrictions would be worthwhile in any case.

Also, time how long it takes to drain out a load of soapy rinsing water. (It should be less than 60 seconds as a rule) 4.5 minutes is a very generous drain out phase it must be said. 😉

Sometimes it drains and sometimes it doesn’t. Tonight the pump ran for 6 minutes before shutting off and putting up the error code. It didn’t drain anything during this time. I can gravity empty the drum using the waste pipe no problem so I assume that all the pipes are clear.

Also using the multimeter there appears to be earth leakage at the element.

Does this mean that I have a knackered element and pump? Time for scrap?!

Both heater and pump are inexpensive.

I would replace the pump and element but it now doesn’t seem to be filling with water correctly! It will only fill properly on the rinse cycle but not any of the other wash programs. The machine had probably not been used for 1 year before I tried it recently

Then pull the drawer out and clean the inlet nozzles of the dispenser cavity. Also check the water inlet filter.
