ParticipantHELP?!
We have a Hoover Performa 1100 (WA110) which has decided it no longer wants to spin
Since last night it doesn’t appear to move the drum at all in any cycle and just sits there although all the other pumps seem to be merrily pumping and all the usual noises go on (it amazing how many noises I always thought were clothes moving inside the drum really weren’t!)
I’ve had the back and the top off and all looks fine to my amazingly professional eyes (i.e. there are no obvious blocks in the pipes, no obvious loose wires and the belt is on OK)
I was planning to run a multimeter across the motor to see if it was getting power but the thing seems to have loads of red wires going to it(a lot more than the 2 I was expecting) and gave up on this
Scanning the internet people seem to say that its usually the brushes – can anyone advise if this is the case or if there is anything else I should check first?
If it is likly to be the brushes how do I get to them without damaging the machine? as my missus will smack me round the head with a blunt object if I break it any further and I don’t want to have to go buy a new kettle/toaster/cat as well
Any advice would be greatfully welcomed
Cheers Loads

Ah, humour in the face of adversity……..
Ok, plug out, then pull the plug from the motor. Three circuits through it – tacho, field and armature. The brushes run against the armature. So – 1 pair of terminals will give you a high ohms reading, the other two pairs should give you a low ohms reading. If there’s no circuit through the ones to the armature, the brushes are shot. They’re in the black cartridges on the far end of the motor – removing it is by far the easiest way of fitting them.
spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will be able to supply replacements for you quickly, and at a sensible price.
If you’re not sure, use the link below for a UKW engineer in your area.

I had this problem
indeed ordering new brushes fixed the problem
if you do the work you can turn the machine upside down and replace them
however you will need a star screwdriver not philips, and when you receive the brushes they will have to be poked out manually as they come stuck inside….
what a mission but saved myself £80 callout and labour
thanks chapsMarch 23, 2012 at 8:01 pm #197091iadom

For the benefit of anyone else reading this,
Please DO NOT turn the machine upside down under any circumstances. A really stupid thing to do with a washing machine. :rolls:
