I have a 4 year old Hoover WDM130, the bearings have recently gone, it also randomly leaks during washing just a little puddle of water that is coming from under the machine, the leaking has been happening for about 4mths or so. Now that the bearings are gone I am unsure if this machine is worth repairing due to its age, or if I would be better of buying a reconditioned or new machine. I want to do the most economical thing but have no idea what that is. Help please!

It depends on how badly the bearings have failed and any subsequent damage to the drum shaft to an extent.

The slight leak for 4 months has probably been the bearing seal letting water through and on to the bearings. If you open the door and check any undue movement in relation to the inner drum and the outer tub by pushing upward, if it’s quite a bit it will suggest either a badly broken up bearing and/or drum shaft damage.

Not easy without a strip down to be honest, power off if checking further inwardly 😉

Worth mentioning that if it really is under five years old then it should be covered for parts under Hoover’s parts warranty, you should only have to pay the labour charge, much cheaper than buying a new machine.

The drum pushes about very easily, and rattles really badly when spun. I had thought about the free parts with it being under 5years but I am yet to track down my reciept, plus I am worried about the cost of labour especially if the machine has another fault. I also have been told that the bearings can’t be ordered seperatly anymore and the whole drum etc will need to be ordered instead which is not available yet and no idea of when the parts needed will be in stock, which will push up the price and how long i will be without a washing machine and as i need to do about 3loads of washing a day i cant be without one for too long

Nonsense, it’s just Hoover choose not to supply them 😉

There are two bearings both of which would need to be removed from the drum to identify, they should cost around £15 for the pair and the bearing seal is about the same price (which is available easily), then you should replace the tub seal which around £8.

If you decide to proceed, I can supply all of the above, just let me know.
