I have the above washing machine and whilst it was in use 2 days ago the house circuit blew. Had a guy out from Npower who identified the fault as being with the above w/mc. If the w/mc is not connected to the house circuit no problem. If plugged in the whole circuit trips. He demonstrated this 3 times. Hotpoint’s engineer is coming to our home this coming Tuesday. If he decides the fault is not with the washing m/mc there will be a £100 plus callout charge. Any advice on simple tests to identify where the problem lies would be appreciated. When the circuit trips the fuse in the w/mc does not blow. As a non-electrician I would expect that fuse to blow if their was a fault with the w/mc.

Any comments will be appreciated. Cheers. (The w/mc is 3 months old).

The circuit breaker at the main house board will blow long before a fuse in the plug. I suspect it is the earth leakage breaker that is going. If it works fine with the machine unplugged and blows with the machine in then I would say that’s fairly conclusive.

Hot point engineer identified the heating element in the washer as the problem. He replaced it and its working fine now. 3 months seems a very short period for such a fault to develop in a new washer.
