    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

    Hi,

Thanks for the great amount of info on 1420. I was a great looking machine. Maybe an example will turn up sometime, even in bad condition. I will find it quite awkward finding models 1400-1460 over here as they will be branded GALA unless it’s a machine sold in NI. I got a massive amount of work done today in the wash house.

    Dismantled spinner.
Found that the shoes looked like they were brand new.
    Cleaned assy.
    Lubricated bearings.
    Cleaned can.
    Put spinner back together.
    Took out pump.
    Seen no rust.
    Took it apart.
Found that the gasket was a little bad.
Applied sealant to the gasket and sandwiched the pump together again and screwed it together.
Applied sealant around the edge to be safe.
Waiting to put pump back in again.

Took the pulsator out of my Hoover 3102E single tub and greased the shaft.
ACCIDENTLY DROPPED PULSATOR AND FOUND A TINY HAIRLINE CRACK!
    Will it be ok?

    James.

It should be OK but you may still be able to source one of those.

The 1420 was not a patch on the 1400. The wash side was exactly the same but the spin side was really cheapened.

Wafer thin metal outer spin can, suspect water seals. A capacitor situated in a position that allowed it to get wet, and go off with a big bang. A pump that had the flat base cover held on my spring clips, it leaked all over the place. They even issued five tiny ‘G’ clamps to replace the clips before finally using screws to secure the two halves of the pump and supplying it as a complete unit. Spin lid hinges that corroded away in no time at all etc.

They did make a repair kit that consisted of a plastic outer spin can similar to the one used in the later 1450 models. It was a pain to fit and very difficult to seal at the top.

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

    Hi Jim,

At least I have a 1420 in picture form. They look a little like the later machines apart from bits here and there. I’m aiming on finding a Countess for the spinner Hoover Spinarinse for the Single Tub. Would be nice to to have something else rare apart from the 1018 Spinner. What about a 1848 if I can’t find a 1830 or 1850/1?

Also just to make sure. What way do the shoes sit in the carrier? They both have a semi circle engraved on one side and a box with a number on the other. I think they were semi circle up when the came out and I put them in again semi circle up but just to make sure. I haven’t turned the machine on until I get the pump in and I don’t want to wreck the shoes also.

Whoa, way to big, you need to resize those pictures, they are going way off screen. :rolls:

Those clutch shoes are quite badly worn TBH. Once the end of the shoe becomes pointed then they will not perform as well as they should. They are the correct way round, that said fitting them the wrong way round would eventually burn out the motor.

It’s getting up to speed though, even when loaded? Is it really that bad? I really don’t want to part with £12 for new ones and they also look a slightly different shape too. Maybe the the plastic ones are shaped differently to the fibre ones? I’ll get a new pair when the twinny arrives if it is really that bad?

    James.

    P.S. Image resized!

Are you viewing it on a 50 inch screen, 😉 its still going way off the edge, I will attend to it.
If it is still spinning then they should be OK, they were used on the later top loaders, those would not stand a chance on one of those.

What do you mean? ❓ Definately spinning well so far.

No actually 15 inch laptop! 😆

I thought 800×600 would be ok?

BTW, will a Liberator be easy to get with patience? These were kind of undiscovered until last year. I’d really like a 1848 as I might be getting a 1701 Dryer soon.

    Regards, James.

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

There we are, much better. 8) 800×600 is fine but it was still well over that before I resized it. 😉 I had to reduce it to 30{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of its original size to get it down to that.

I mean if you put those clutch shoes in a top loader they would not even move it round.

I still have a couple of customers with 1848’s in regular use.

I did give a 28 year old 18780 Microtronic the death sentence a few weeks back. The alloy back plate had finally corroded through.

The water is very soft in this area and unless the user does a very regular hot wash the alloy components such as the old backplates and drum support spiders do rot badly.

It is nice to hear of a 16 year old that has an interest in things like this, however I do hope that either you or someone close to you has some basic electrical knowledge, safety first at all times. 😉

I wondered if you had any thoughts on this observation. 😉

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

Thanks for that I will make them smaller in future.

Probably not but I want to squeeze as much out of it as I only have limited savings for washing machines.

I forgot about the first Microtronic I want that too! The purple ones have a special place in my heart though as well as the 1830. Who know’s maybe I’ll get something this year. My local repairman (who has been long in the business) tries his best to keep the old stuff working so maybe he’ll have something old I can get.

Oh yeah safety first. I always unplug the machines when working at them and my uncle is an electrician so I am well tought.

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

    Hi,

Well I put the sealed pump back into the spinner again and it isn’t leaking no more. I tried to keep it as tidy looking as possible so that it looks un-altered.

Now something else went wrong. The interlock is playing up and I tried to adjust the cable on the right but didn’t have any effect. Then I noticed a spring stretched you might be able to tell me what to do from these two pictures.

It looks like I have to take the fascia off to take the interlock out but how?

Thanks for all your help so far, James.

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

Never had to remove the interlock mechanism on one of these or the twin tub version.

Its possible you may have disturbed the small black plastic pecker that should press against the side of the brake drum housing when you took the clutch assembly off.

That spring is to return the plastic arm and wheel to the upright position .

If the lid will not open with the small plastic arm in the position it is in your picture the the fault lies down below. Those cables don’t look to bad at all.

you may need to replace the spring but it must be similar to the one that is mangled, it is only a very light, weak spring.

    Re: Hotpoint 1018 Spinner Leak

Here is the scenario: Spinner turns on as normal. When I push the button the first time to stop the machine it’s normal. When I push to button a second time to lift the lid it won’t open. After the first push the small white plastic arm is horizontal to turn off the power to the motor so the lid must open when this is horizontal. Is the cable adjusted to the correct position? The pecker is touching the brake drum the last time I checked. How can I fix the spring so that the small white arm can return upright in order to turn the machine on correctly? I am sure it isn’t a spare anymore. I think the two springs attached to the metal part and the plastic arm is one spring hooked over a bar or something.

    Disappointed with vintage machines LOL!
