ParticipantHi All,
Newbie here.
My Washing machine (Hotpoint 1200 De Luxe 9549) won’t work. I’ve done some checks that I can think of. The door switch works, The water inlet valves work (by hooking up directly to the mains). The pump works (by hooking up directly to the mains). The Motor runs (before taking the house earth leakage trip out – by hooking up directly to the mains). The Thermostat is open circuit at room temperature (Is that OK?). The Power on light comes on. But whatever setting I try on the Timer/Controller – nothing happens. I had thought to trace the mains through the system but that appears to be rather difficult. I tried to see if volts would appear at the water inlet valves when I set the controller to a wash cycle start but there appears to be no continuity from power in to valve using my ohm meter. The printed circuit board that the valves appear to be connected to might be low voltage – I don’t know. I haven’t yet attempted to connect up with my meter in place tho’. But since the water doesn’t flow when it is connected up it maybe suggests that the switch in the controller has failed. But how can I check? If it is the controller – how much for a new one?
Any thoughts or ideas welcome.January 17, 2011 at 3:45 pm #341537Washman

Hi
Live testing should never be attempted,a multimeter should be used.
And motors are designed to be controled by the electronic board ,so should never be connected directly to mains voltage.Washman

have you checked the door lock and the connections on the side of the timer

I have to agree with Washman, some very dangerous and totally unnecessary methods being employed here. :rolls:
There is no fault of any kind on a washing machine of this type that cannot be found with the machine totally disconnected from the mains and by using a megger or suitable multimeter.
For any other members of the public reading this, please do not attempt any of the actions listed in the first post, it would be extremely stupid to do so 😥

You have it suedehead1. I had checked the door switch. I thought it was the timer/controller so was removing it when I found a connector was loose. The connectors there are well hidden under the flanges at the corner of the machine and not obvious until disassembly. The loose connection was in the door lock circuit. It all works now.
As for your safety advice guys. Thanks. I have played with electricals for donkey’s ages (up to 150kV+) so am well aware of the nasty potential. I am always very careful. However, as has been said, don’t try this at home folks.
Thanks everyone 😀
