ParticipantI’ve just had to replace a broken drum spigot on my daughters 14 yr old Hotpoint WD62. That’s the first repair needed, OK only 5 loads per week on average mind, but overall that’s got to be a creditable record in the grand scheme of all things Hotpoint I would have thought? I did spot a small hole in the door boot (replaced that too) and stuck in a new pair of brushes for good measure.
I can see why the iadom steadfastly gets his customers to hang on to these gems of yesteryear…… They don’t make ’em like that no more!

Yep good machines. Did a spider on a 95360 a month ago. 26 yrs she’s had it and although a little rust on cabinet it’s perfect

Last week was interlock/blown timer week, incredibly I had three WM machines between 14 and 12 years old, on three consecutive days with exactly the same fault, door interlock had blown the track at the front edge of the timer. All three up and running with new door lock and a quick repair with the soldering iron.
One of them had just come back from holiday, switched on and POP. One of the other customers had just had a new kitchen fitted. The kitchen fitters wheeled it back into place, plugged in, switched on and also got the dreaded POP. how unlucky is that, sheer coincidence as there is no way they could have caused the fault but they were mighty relieved. 8)

I had exactly that with an elderly customer. I turn up she says it not working properly so I close door switch on and bang. Frightened the life out of both of us. Glad it happened whilst I was there, new lock and as you say a bit of soldering and bobs you’re aunty

Proof indeed.
Just saying.
Just think though, £299.00 20 yrs ago was a lot of money compared to today.

That is open to conjecture, I would say that £250//£299 twenty years ago was a decent price for well made goods.

I’m paid to repair.
Both my misses and my bank prefer it that way.
I’m sure those used to the mangle prefered it to the new technology of the day.
One detail l have noticed though, even products labelled by some as cheap chinese s88t does last when used correctly.
I’ve called recently to a 3 yr old Siemans that retails close to £800 with a split spider and damaged bearings.

Nothing escapes your watchful eye. But, I’m curious to know how you came to make that astute observation? And what exactly is your definition of the word “last” in terms of Chinese made washing machines?

I agree we need things to go wrong but I’ve lost count of the number of noisy HOTPOINT/indesit queries I’ve had recently with bearing faults

Simple.
I speak to people and ask them.
Much the same way you do.
I have lots of experience but yet to reach an age that my life yearns for the good old days.
