I use the split collet from the hotpoint bearing change kit; put the bolt through it from the side I’m going to be hammering, wedge it open into the bearing shell with a couple of tapered pin punches to stop it collapsing inwards as I’m hammering, do the nut up to keep it all nice and tight, then give it a good bladdering on the bolt head with a hammer and steel drift.
They normally move after a few cussings!

buy a new bearing the same size
open bearing and break the cage so you can take it apart
clean around old bearing ring in tub and wd 40 where its going to move
get some grease and put about 6 of the new ball bearings in the old outer ring at the bottom in some grease
take the new bearing middle place it carefully on top of these balls. then with a small screwdriver work the balls till they are evenly around the ring the grease should hold them
turn the tub so the ring is facing downwards ( i use a B&D workmate as it can accomodate the heater and tub lips
when level check balls have not moved then using a steel rod and a lump hammer carefully knock out ringif all goes well less than 10 mins and its out

Had same recently on my first 30mm. Eventually did the drill into aluminium behind it trick to get a sharp chisel in there. As usual the shell breaks before it will come out. Always get there in the end.
Tip: Wear ear protectors; tinnitus is no fun. 😉

Use a 1/2″ britool 12″ socket ext which I have ground the end to sit just in the ledge between bearing casing,at the right angle leaning in on the opposite side and a lump hammer it either moves or fractures, sadly re dressing the end is shortening it’s life as is mine although don’t hget anything like the numbers with the demise of the older machines.
Sometimes marks the entry for the outer bearing but cleans up no problems.
Oh don’t forget to have that extra weetabix 🙂June 22, 2011 at 3:05 pm #354023gandh1
