ParticipantHotpoint WMA52 bearing job. I quoted assuming it would be the normal large shaft bearings but when I got the old ones out I found it is the 30mm shaft type. I was looking at the seal and trying to figure out how it works. It is in 2 parts, a conventional garter seal and a central part which is a plastic cone at one end and a steel bowler hat shape at the other. It came assembled with the plastic cone inserted in the garter seal but I’m not sure if that’s correct. When fitted on the shaft the centre section is a tight fit so it is evidently meant to turn with the shaft. This means it is turning relative to the garter seal so the moving parts will need lubrication. There is hardly any grease on the garter seal but there is plenty of grease on the sides and brim of the bowler hat part of the centre section. Does this mean the garter seal is supposed to run on the bowler hat bit? Photo shows it how the seal was assembled as received:

whenever i have seen this thin shaft i have always replaced it and put the thick shaft cross piece and bearings on. Dont even think you can get that thin cross shaft cross piece any more (might be wrong). Its inexpensive I can get the thick shaft and bearings for about £15.
Sorry no real help thereMarch 26, 2008 at 11:06 am #246992Phidom

New half tub, spider and spider screws would make the make the machine BER and I don’t have any secondhand large bearing half tubs.

‘large bearing half tubs’? I thought all the tubs are the same just the bearings are different. I have replaced the small shaft bearings and cross piece with the large shaft bearings and cross piece with no trouble in the past, all in the same rear tub.

How do you get a 6207 into a hole designed for a 6206?? 😕

That’s good because that’s the way I did it. I’ve just come back from the workshop 🙂

Participantoh sorry maybe ther is two size rear tubs, gets a bit confusing i normally just match them up in the workshop and knock them out, got loads of them now, carry a complete one on the van. actually only seen a couple of the ones with the thin cross piece but thought they had the same bearing assy.

Expect more of the 30mm types – I have had a disproportionate amount of 30mm bearing machines to do lately. They seem to be fitted to the later production and are not as reliable as the 35mm Rubena ones.
Changing the 30mm bearings is easy and the shafts are generally fully serviceable for reuse.
The 35mm tub half is a straight swap for the 30mm; the bearing kits are not interchangeable. You either change the 30mm bearing or upgrade to the 35mm tub half et al. (only viable way to do that is to use a spare s/hand tub half). The 30mm shaft is available as a special order item and costs a whopping £51.00 + VAT. 😯Hope that helps,
Steve.

Just a little tip, if the pulley is plastic it is likely to be a 30mm bearing, 35mm usually have metal pulleys, can save you time if you strip one down only to find you dont have the bearings to fit,

Hotpoint introduce the WMA range which apart from a problematic drum shaft seal was a reasonable machine, good simple electronics, they overcame the seal problem with the rubena seal and the machine was quite reliable. Indesit move in…. now look – rubbish bearings and seals – welded tanks – oh and the electronics 😈

In theory this new type of seal should mean less scrapped spiders as both the fixed and the rotating surfaces which form the seal are renewed just by changing the seal.
