ParticipantMy Octogenarian neighbour is having problems with her:
Hotpoint 7822W dishwasher. S/N 6i374486.
The fault is that the cups in the top Basket are not being cleaned.
I looked into the machine and the top basket has a rotating arm with holes on the top. These holes are clear and not blocked. The arm is supported by a vertical tube about 6 inches long with another tapering tube inside it.
Above this tube there is a plastic pipe in the top of the machine which appears to be the source of the water that should be entering the tube, rotating the arm and cleaning the cups.
The problem is that there is about an inch gap between the pipe and the tube and I have failed to see how these two are connected.
Is there a part missing? I can see that there cannot be a permanent connection between the pipe and tube as the basket will not be able to be withdrawn.
I guess that the connection must take place when the machine is running.
Can someone please help me understand how the system works and how I can fix it as she uses the machine daily.
I do have some experience with electrical and mechanical equipment.
Thanks very much in advance.

The tapering tube is not connected directly to the top of the inner cabinet. The water jet is forced into the tube and out through the nozzles.
Is there any water actually coming out of the top jet? To test this remove the upper basket and place a large bowl on top of the lower basket and run the machine for a few seconds on a wash cycle. The bowl should quickly fill with water.
I have attached an image from the manual which gives a few possible reasons. You must also bear in mind that this unit is around 20 years old now and many parts are obsolete.

Hi Iadom,
Thanks very much for your most informative and prompt response. This is most appreciated. I cannot believe that I did not think of placing a bowl in the basket to see if the water is being supplied. I guess because I had imagined that there must be a sealed connection between the top and bottom pipes.
Thanks too for the additional possibilities.Best regards,
John

Hi again iadom,
I tried your suggestion to put a bowl on the lower basket then run several times in Main Wash and Prewash for about a miiute or two. Heard a pump (sounded like) operating, then some tick – tick noise and then another pump sound. But No water anywhere.
This was curious as she had preciously completed 2 main wash cycles. after which there was water in the bottom.
Checked the filters in the bottom and they were absolutely clear.
I wonder what would cause the water not to flow at startup?
Any further suggestions please? Do I need to remove the washer from under the worktop and raise the top cover?
Thanks againJohn

Most of the possible causes are listed in my first post. Very unlikely to be a blockage of the hose to the top spray arm, more likely to be a main circulation pump failure if none of the above possibilities are found.

You’ll need to remove the left hand side panel, clean out the float chamber and transfer hose to the tub. Check the operation of the float microswitch and ensure the inlet valve filter is clean just for starters. So yes it’s got to be pulled out.
Power OFF before fiddling. :zap:

Thanks Martin.
I vaguely remember some appliance long ago with tubes and a float mechanism on the side.
I always Power Off and wear latex gloves.July 6, 2016 at 8:33 pm #439082iadom

This is not a Bosch clone so does not suffer from the hose blockage or float chamber mechanism that Martin mentions, this model range was mainly Hotpoint’s very own, in house production. 😉

Really? Not the 7822W I recall, they were 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Bosch.

7822 blow up.
The very small float and micro switch is located inside the fill matrix near the top. The main, black rubber ‘transfer hose’ 113 never ,ever blocked in my experience. It did however often get chewed away by rodents on many occasions. Can send you a pdf of the manual if you like. 🙂

Yes Jim, it’s a Bosch. The float often sticks as does its microswitch. The black rubber hose is a major source of blockages, and easily cleared. The OP just has to unclip it from the fill matrix and give it a good BLOW!
The water inlet/safety valve also a caution and shouldn’t be overlooked,

Damned mice always seemed to go for that black hose

Never seen the slightest sign of blockage or gunge build up in that hose though.

These days the rubber simply shrivels and perishes like an aged weenie struggling to pass water. 😕

Hi guys,
Many thanks for your help and advice. I wish you were on the Nissan car Forum to answer all my problems there.
The lady has decided she needs a change and we have selected a Bosch. the one with a Dial selector as all she needs to do is select the wash once and startup. All following washes do not need a degree in nuclear science. Just the simplest control functions. And this Bosch appears to have it.
This is a great Forum and I have been using the Whitegoods Forum for many years now.
Thanks again for your help.John
