OUr old hotpoint washing machine is just started spinning with a very large thud and attempting to cross the floor. Is this the end?

It depends on what you had in it at the time. If it was a normal load, with several similar sized items then you may have a problem. If you have tried to wash a couple of bath mats, sheepskin rug, large heavy sweater, extra large towel with a few bits or any other load that is likely to go ‘out of balance’ then it may be the load that caused the problem.

800 is only a spin speed, we would need the correct model number to give you a better idea, there are several different control systems used on these machines so other reasons for excessive jumping can vary.

Oops, that model is right on the change over point and can have any one of the three different control systems. I should have asked you for the serial number as well, that includes a date code.

You don’t need to have a ‘heavy’ load to have an out of balance load, one large woollen sweater would weigh less than six or seven large towels but is far more likely to jump around, it is not so much the weight as the type of items in the load.
Also, when you look inside the door, does the drum appear to have dropped to one side, is the door seal all scrunched ( nice word ) up?
