Hotpoint 8112 Larder Fridge – how to replace thermostat?

The thermostat’s gone in my fridge. I was gonna replace it with a Ranco Varifix VX-0.

However I can’t work out how to dismantle the existing thermostat.

How is it even fixed in, there appears to be no screws?

Also – what’s the silver (uncoated) wire at the top and how does it fix into the thermostat? (all the coated ones look like they just ‘plug in’)

OK, I’ve read up a bit more and understand the ‘silver wire’ is a capillery tube full of gas.

I can’t see where it goes to once it reaches the back of the fridge (thermostat’s at the front). Do I need to replace that tube? If not how does it connect to the ‘stat?

Cool, thanks. Have read around, but still stuck on where the capillery tube goes to in my fridge.

I’ve managed to dismantle the thermostat (pulled the knob off 😮 and undid the nut behind) but the tube looks soldered on. I can pull all the other wires off, but I assume I’ve got to replace the tube & the thermostat together?

Tracing the tube to the back of the fridge it goes behind the metal plate at the back. I’ve undone the three fixing screws but there’s something still holding the plate in place – how do I get behind it?

Usually it’ll pop off somehow but, don’t be too rough as if you rupture a pipe it’s game over and night, night Sooty for the fridge.

Why didn’t you just use a the proper thermostat, this one, rather than faffing about with a Ranco kit. You’ll probably have to wind up the capillary in the stat housing, which can be fun.

Just seems a lot of bother to go to.

Maybe I will get that ‘proper’ one – the Ranco one was the first one I found.

When you say the back plate should ‘pop off’, how should I try working it? Sliding? Up/Down? Or rotating? Or just pullingit towards me? I’ve never taken one off before so no idea.

Is it a pipe that’s currently stopping it from coming away?

Not done one.

But, usually it will lift up enough somehow or move in some way to allow access.

At the bottom of the plate there are two screws at either corner and two other screws close together.

Release the two at each corner to allow the bottom edge of the plate to be ‘gently’ moved forwards, you don’t need to remove the top one, then release the other two screws which hold the plate that clamps the end of the capillary tube in place.
