Hotpoint 8129 larder fridge – auto defrost not working

My Hotpoint 8129 is not auto defrosting. It builds up a lot of ice. The compressor struggles to lower the temp and is on a lot with a lot of heat coming out the back. fridge temp is poor and the milk goes off quicker…..

Hotpoint call-out with a repair is a minimum of £100 it seams …(39.99 call-out & diagnosis plus repair at 59.99 labour) so I’m wondering if a new fridge may be the best bet as the Hotpoint is 10 years old – but it’s in good condition apart from this problem.

Any advice please. What is the likely problem? Is this a problem I can fix with a diy repair?

These fridges are generally very reliable but with one achilles heal ‘the thermostat’ – If you feel up to the job I would suggest you ‘take a chance’ buy one from shop@ (left sidebar) and have a go. Its much cheaper that Hotpoint and what have you to lose. :zap: Power off first please
