Ok, this unit has had a good innings – 15 years now – with various help from the kind people on this forum 🙂

Now all of a sudden i’m getting a VERY loud screeching sound coming from the bottom. I’m guessing it is the compressor.

Is there anything I can do? Bit of WD40? 🙂

Otherwise, time for a new one (not a Hotpoint mind you).

Ok, I figured out what the screeching noise was – it was the fridges swan song. It no longer operates – and there is a burning smell. There are no error codes on the display oddly enough – i’ve switched it off – perhaps i’ll try and switch it on again later once it has cooled down.

It has come back to life. Left it off for a few hours to cool down, and it has started up again. Any recommendations here? I still want/need to replace it. Would a full defrost be a good idea?

Possibly one of the fans, one in freezer behind backplate.
The more likely is the one underneath that cools the condenser.
Take of lower rear panel and it will be at the side of the compressor.
Check it rotates, also clear all fluff etc out of front and rear condenser (black radiator device).

Thanks – i’ll check that. It certainly sounded like it was coming from the bottom or back of the unit. I cleared a load of fluff from the front radiator – by removing the front grille – but i’ve never opened the back. I’ll try it this weekend.
