ParticipantHave recently aquired a fabulous Hotpoint 9326A Reversomatic Dryer Deluxe. Needless to say its old but is a real workhorse.
Recently on the first load of the day, when going clockwise it emits a constant ear piercing squeal. Yet when it reverses the squeal quietens. This is like this for the first 10 mins or so of the cycle. After that it’s fine.
Any ideas on what it could be.
I know these truly are great machines. As my friend has the same model!
Any help appreciated. Thanks!

hi, probably dry/dusty belt jockey pulleys, they tension the belt either side of the motor, can sometimes just be lubricated to solve

This lovely machine has two jockey pulleys that are spring loaded to tension the drive belt. When the drum turns one of the arms gets pulled in and the other relaxes on the motion of the belt. You’ll find that one of the pulleys is worn which is why it only squeals in one direction.
The temporary repair is to strip out, clean and grease the pulley bearing but the only cure is to replace it. Chances are if one is worn the other is not far behind so best practice would be to replace both.
Have a look in Shop@ to find them…part no. 179070.
If they’re not there then a quick email to Dave_Conway will get results 😉April 8, 2007 at 11:32 pm #210267hotpnt

there were 2 types of pulley used, one has a circlip on the pin, slip it off, the pin slides out clean & a small amount of grease, the others dont have the circlip. and the pin is fixed on one side the other side needs to be very carefully bent away so the pulley can be slipped of & again cleaned, not a bad job & saves the screach, one other point (though it usually causes an ongoing screach) is on the back of the drum shaft, there is a copper earth strip, this should be quite flat but can wear & squeal on the shaft

Indeed, but it’s worth pointing out that this should not be greased as this defeats the drum earthing. :lesson:

WD40 will last about half an hour 😆
Use some LM grease (good old-fashioned heavy grease). As I said earlier this will give a temporary repair but unfortunately the grease will collect fluff gradually and the pulley will tighten up after a few months.

Problem sorted… Flogged it on eBay!
Got a second hand whirlpool dryer from eBay to replace it. Hehe!
The Whirlpool is extremly quiet, although the reverse action is not as good as the hotpoint, the drying times are also quicker that the hotpoint!!
Any good/bad things i should be aware of with the whirlpool dryer?
