Purely centrifugal force allows the the two clutch shoes to grip against the cast iron outer pulley to create drive to the spin can. The old fibre shoes and the later black plastic shoes wear pretty quickly. They should have a nice curved edge for maximum grip. Likewise the brake shoe must be well clear of the cast iron pulley to allow the spin can to quickly rotate. Worn top bearing under the bellows seal often restricts the spin can from reaching full speed.

Thanks… Great help as I’ve never worked on one. This looks in really good condition for its age, so I really want to fix it.

Hundreds, more like thousands.

This was the third generation Hotpoint twin tub after the 1400 range and the 1420 models, the 1420 was advertised at the time with a threepenny bit stood end on on top of the spin lid to demonstrate how smooth it was. 😆 The youngsters on the forum can Google for threepenny bit if you like. 😉

This 9404 machine is still basically a Hotpoint 1450, first produced 47 years ago in January 1966, before England last won the World Cup . :eeek:

The 9404 was first produced 25 years ago.
