I afraid I have to concur with Martin, this is not really a simple DIY job.
You may be better off trying our Find an Engineer facility.
They should be able to check the overall condition of the machine to ascertain if the repair is viable in the first place.

Not to worry. I am hoping only to be able to identify the numbers on the timer, so that I can order it from the above website. I will then have a professional put it in for me. I figure it is cheaper this way, rather than have a professional come and remove the top to first see the numbers and then have to return to install the new timer. Two call-outs!
Thanks again for everyone’s assistance. Really helpful!November 8, 2011 at 8:32 pm #362289inisfad

Hopefully you’ll come back….I bought a replacement piece for the washer:

I have my old timer knob off, but I cannot figure out how to get the original broker ‘insert’ out of the dial, so I can put the new one in. Is it glued or something? I have removed the 2 small screws on the face of the dial. I am hoping that when I did my ‘temporary’ repair of supergluing the dial on to the spindle, that I didn’t superglue this insert on to the dial as well. Is that it, or is there a trick to getting this off? Thanks again for all your help!!November 8, 2011 at 10:12 pm #362290iadom

If you have superglued it then you may not be able to split it without breaking.
The later control knobs were all in one piece,
Does your old timer knob have numbers 1 to 7 or wash temperature symbols?
There may still be some of the old control knobs available, the complete 1 to 7 knob is part number 168807 which is the correct one for your machine.

I got the inner knob off – it appears I was quite generous with the superglue – fortunately I had some acetone and that, along with a bit of filing, has got the area smooth. My next question is that this inner knob can apparently be put on 3 different ways. I don’t want to play around with this, in case I can’t get the inner knob off again. How do I determine which way this knob goes on? Thanks

A couple of other questions, too – and thanks for your patience. The inner knob has a screw and nut, as well as a metal piece. I have the broken original piece, and I can see how the screw nut and metal piece are put together. However, there is a slot on the new inner knob – where I assume the metal piece slides into (part of this slot is broken on my original knob). When I slide the metal piece into the slot, it seems to be under a bit of tension if I try to align it with the screw. Is this correct? And do I put this all together and then just slide this on to the spindle of the machine, and screw it on?

Eck, stupid me! Never mind – I was nervous trying this, but I see that yes, the metal bit fits in well, and yes, there is only one way for this to go one. Cool. Sorry to have been such a pest!!
But if you will have patience with me for one more question – if you WANTED to take the dial off, what is the proper way to do it??
Thank you again.November 9, 2011 at 9:41 am #362294iadom

You remove the top of the machine and turn the knob so that the screw that tightens the clamp faces upwards, there is a hole down which you can poke a screwdriver to loosen the screw. All with the plug removed of course. 😉

Thanks! Was actually able to figure this out on my own. It is done and repaired, and now I will be able to accurately see where (or if) the machine stops in mid cycle.
Thank you all for your help. The repair ended up costs a whopping £2.00!!August 2, 2022 at 10:32 am #362296inisfad
ParticipantWow…..I just happened upon this thread, and can’t believe that this is 11 years old (as well as how far I’ve come in the repair of my machine, since then). Good Lord, I sound awfully unprepared for any kind of actual repair. Since 2011, I’ve just about rebuilt this machine, from bearings to belts to pumps, to spiders, to suspension rods, etc., etc.
Anyway, I had started a new thread about the timer, but happened upon this thread, and in the very first post, the recommendation was about the cold water valve. I had purchased a new one, but never put it in, as turning the water off at the mains had stopped the water from seeping into the drum when the machine was off. I had the top of the machine off yesterday (to take photos of the timer, assuming I was going to have to replace it), and decided that since I was in the machine, I might as well put the new cold water valve in. I did. And voila. The machine is going through the complete cycle now. Just thought I’d post on to this really old thread, to thank you (once again) for the always expert advice. Thanks, guys. -
