Hotpoint 9559W – Bearings/Seals

Hi All, Newbie here.

I’m in the process of replacing the bearings on my Hotpoint 9559W and I can’t for the life of me see how the seal and bearings go in. (Well the inner bearing was totally destroyed so I didn’t see how it was put together). I’ll attempt to explain.

There are two bearings – a large diameter one which is the inner one and a smaller one which is the outer (I think?). The seal that I have allows the small bearing to sit in nicely but has an outer diameter which is larger than the diameter of the housing for the small bearing. It has the correct diameter to fit the inner housing (where I think a seal should go?). However if I put the seal in there then the small diameter bearing which it mates with won’t go over the shaft and the large diameter bearing is too big for the outer housing.

One solution would be to fit the bearings where they would fit and throw away the seal. Did the bearings run wet originally?

Now I’m really confused 😕 . Is there anyone out there who isn’t please 😀 ?

Hi Eric 🙂 The largest bearing goes on the inside of the tub, followed by the seal. The smallest bearing goes on the back (outer) of the tub. The bearings need to fit in the housing tight! The seal is vastly important. The washer won’t last 2 minutes without it.

If your bearings don’t fit, I’d sugguest that you have the wrong kit 🙁 Is there a part number/description with the bearings?

If you are that confused over where they go then I think you should get an engineer out to fit the bearings.

Look under repairs@ on the left

Thanks Goatboy. That sort of makes sense. I think I have the correct parts. Numbers on the package are W022505W and 16897077.

There is a circlip on the shaft at the inner end – what does that do? Does it prevent the bearing pushing too far towards the spider? The “wear pattern” (it’s subtle not terminal) suggests that. And then the seal will be more or less right up against the spider shoulder so that when all clamped down it squashes onto the shaft?

I think there may still be some bits of the old inner bearing in the housing – ridge like things a little way in – or are they just locator dongles?

I think Mike is right. There’s so many variables during this job, and they all have to be perfect. Otherwise the new bearing wont last at all. Starting with the drum suport/shaft. You should fit a new one if your doing the bearings.
