Hi, I have a Hotpoint APM 6842 built in fridge/freezer that is no longer cooling or freezing. The unit has power (fridge light on) but the motor/compressor never seems to kick in and is extremly hot.

I have checked the obvious things, door closes ok, thermostat set but the unit now seems totally dead. My initial reaction was to get rid and buy a new unit, but I am having difficulty in finding a replacement that meets the same dimensions 175.5×54.5×51.5 and I don’t want to start changing my kitchen.

Is there anything I can further check to try and rsolve the problem myself?

Is it worth calling out a engineer? I’m worried this would just cost me around 100 pounds and I would still need to buy a new fridge/freezer.

Your guidance on how best to proceed would be most welcome.

    Hotpoint ??

An APM6842 is a Hygena (MFI) brand manufactured by Whirlpool 😉

The most likely cause is the thermostat if the model is correct and well worth repairing as it won’t be overly costly.

Check Repairs@ for an engineer who should be able to help with a service visit 🙂

    Hi Dave,

The model number is correct, for some reason I convinced myself it was a Hotpoint.

Many thanks for the advice and additional info, I’ll try to get it repaired, hopefully that will be the easiest/cheapest solution.

    Cheers
