Hotpoint Aquarious WF740 problems

Hi,

This machine is 18 months old, and used lightly.
Last night it started making a fast,loud scraping noise half way
through a cycle.
I stopped the cycle, and put it on to drain, which it did, but with
the noise continuing.
I removed the wet washing only to find one of the three greenyblue
plastic fittings which fit onto the inside of the drum, was lying in the bottom of the drum. (drum paddle, apparently)
Four of the six lugs seem to have sheared off.
When I spin the drum by hand there is no noise.

We do not wash trainers etc in the machine.

So, are these bits of plastic to blame for this noise? It seems to
come from the front of the machine, under the drum. Am I looking at
replacing a pump assembly?

Is this a known flaw, and is it fit for purpose that it was sold for? (18mths old!)

And most importantly, can i fix this myself?

Or better still, buy two and have a spare one handy for next time.

The grating noise will be you laundry hitting the heating element under the drum through the gaping hole where the paddle was.

Fitting – press down and slide towards the back.

Common problem……… if you use the “Search” facility and put in ‘Hotpoint AND paddle’, for this forum only, you’ll be quite surprised 😀 .

Just gone and turned the dial to drain, with an empty drum- same horrid noise!!

Spare parts look easy to fit, but there is definatley something else going on…..

4 little plastic lugs rattling in the pump? 😆 . You said it was quiet if you turned the drum by hand? I have occasionally seen the heater dislodged by being struck by spinning laundry and that makes a godawful, especially if the retaining bracket has been knocked off as well.

Power off of you are going to check heater, pump etc.

To clarify, drum does not make a noise when turned by hand, and the drain programme does not spin the drum, so that is why i think ( in my complete ignorance about these matters) that the pump is involved in some way.
The noise is metallic revolving grating horrible sound, and quite loud too, like a bearing problem, but much more mechanical?

Apart from washing trainers the other common cause of lifters coming loose is nothing to with the machine being fit for purpose but down to coins, bra wires or other metal objects. I would hazard a guess that this fault is self inflicted. All underwired bras that I have seen say ‘hand wash’ on the label. If you really must wash them in the machine, place them inside an old pillow case and secure the end with a couple of safety pins.

In fact if you shine a torch into the bottom of the drum, through the holes that are visible where the lifter should be you may be able to see the obstruction.

The big worry is that if you do have a foreign body in the drum that you cannot remove easily you may have a major strip down on your hands. At 18 months you may just have bought the machine before the Indesit type sealed drum was fitted to these machines. If you cannot remove the object from one of those you will need a complete new drum assembly. 😥

If the noise starts as soon as you switch the machine on, seconds before the drum starts to revolve then it is possible that whatever you have put in the machine has now gone through into the pump.

Thanks for your replay.

Assuming that my pump is the problem here, as the drum does not have to turn in order for the noise to start, how do I access it, what does it look like, and what do I have to do to clear it?

Remove lower rear panel and follow the black hose……..

Problem sorted!!

Removed rear plastic panel, and loosened jubilee clip from hose assembly below drum outlet.
Discovered a 5p, 10p, 50p, an elastic hair bobble, and various bits of paper, below what looked like a large pingpong ball, held within a plastic type funnel.
This didn’t solve the problem, so I followed the black plastic hose to the pump ( situated in the bottom far right hand corner) , undid the tiewrap holding it on, and found to my delight, two large kirby grips.
This was the obvious source of the noise, and when reassembled, everything ran fine.
Wife and daughter warned about perils of not checking pockets when loading washing machine!

Good news, but I hope it makes you take more care of the machine in future, the 50p coin on its own could have punched a hole through the outer drum landed you with a £150 repair bill for a new drum assembly, this type of fault is not covered by warranty, it is considered misuse. It is worth taking the few seconds needed to check all pockets, you know it makes sense. 😉
