1 day prior to leaving on holiday my machine started knocking and banging as though the drum was coming off its bearings. I am about to return home to face this dilemma. Certain white garments show traces of oil imprinted through the drum holes on white pillow cases. Anyone had any such experience or fixit knowhow ? I live on Teesside, Middlesbrough area if you know any good repair men / Hotpoint reps.

I take it the holiday was in Thailand?

Oil spots/noise/bangings probably point to bearing failure. If this machine is under 5 years old it will be cheaper for you to pay Hotpoint’s call out charge as you will receive your parts for free. If the machine is over 5 years old check repairs@ or the Directories section for a UKW repairer in your area.

Difficult to be more precise without the model number.

Sounds more like a drum support failure, common fault if you use to much detergent and only do low temp washes. If you have stopped using the machine at once then this is a perfectly viable repair, the drum support kit includes new bearings. If you have used the machine once or twice after hearing the noise, you may have damaged the heater.

This applies to WM machines only, if it is a WMA and under five years old then Hotpoint/Indesit is your best course of action.
