Hello everyone this question might have been asked . Have a problem with the dryer it won’t get hot and the dryer light is not coming on. Not sure whether this is part of the problem. The dryer was working and when switched on few days later it wasn’t. Help and advice would be much appreciated. Valleyboy.

Thermostats at the back above the heater are the first things to check, a suitable multimeter or megger required to test for continuity.

iadom thanks for replying, what should I be looking for in a reading on the stats. Have had the stats out, if one or both have failed can you you see on the stats as well. If the heater has gone what should the reading be on the meter, and can you check it in situ. Thanks

No need to remove the stats, one is the temp control stat the other is a ‘one shot’ safety cut out stat. The one shot stat is the cause of no heat in 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of cases. It usually has a small dot of paint on it and sometimes has a small hole in the centre which allows the stat to be reset by pushing a pin carefully into the hole. You don’t need to worry about readings, simple continuity is enough. If the one shot stat has failed then it can be due to a blocked condenser, failing fan, stopping the dryer mid cycle or simply age.

Element failure is not common and a failed element is usually obvious from a visual examination.

Iadom Just found a third stat inside the door, could this cause the problem of no heat, what does this stat do. Have checked the rear stats for continuity and they seem o.k, one thing the drying light on the front facia doesn’t come on when you switch it on, is part of the same fault. Sorry for so many questions.

One thing I didn’t mention to double check, should the stats be convex or concave if they are o.k. Regards

forget that. If you get continuity through them then they are ok

That is the high heat stat, not easily accessible but can occasionally fail. The heater light should come on when the drum is turning in a clockwise direction, the machine tumbles for approx 4 minutes in this direction then reverse for 10 to 12 seconds, during this reverse tumble the heater and the light is switched off. There is no heat for the last 10 minutes so you need to turn the timer to at least 15/20 minutes to get the heater on.

Thankx for the advice that you all have given. Have re-checked the stats three of them and the heater for continuity, all seem o.k zero on the meter. Still no drying light, have done what you advised and tried the machine for 15/20mins to see if light comes on and no joy. What else can I check. Are there any other cut outs or fuses. Would the Drying Relay cause a problem, I replaced that a few years a ago not sure what to do next. Thankx

What do you mean by zero on the meter, the readings for continuity should not be zero? You should also get a different reading from the elements depending on what setting you are using on your meter. What do you mean by the drying relay, do you mean the start relay, the clear brownish plastic box up at the top? That is there to prevent the machine being started with the door open. Can you take a picture of the base of the one shot stat, the one with the dot of paint on it. You will have to host it off site then add a link.

Help and advice still needed from the experts. Have re-checked the stats at the back of the machine with the multimeter and they read 1.1, ohm setting of 200. When touching the probes together to check them they read 1.1 ohm is that correct for the stats to be Good. When checking the heater element how do you check that , with the wires being….. blue /orange/ and brown. Have done a visual check and it seems o.k. There is still the Drying light on the front of the machine not working, is that something to do with this problem as it was working before. Everything else works but no heat in the dryer.

Sorry for late reply, never thought I would be so busy when I retired a few years back.

The only things that can stop the heater from working are the three thermostats, broken wiring, a faulty heater or a faulty control timer.
The only fool proof way to test and eliminate is with good quality test equipment, a wiring diagram and the knowledge to be able to read said diagrams and test accordingly.
Although it is not common the control timer can cause this fault, however given the machines age the timer will be seriously expensive thats if you can even source one .

PS. Just checked on the Hotpoint Spares site and the control timer is as I suspected listed as NLA. Last price for it was over £56.00

Thanks for coming back with that info. What I shall do is buy a new set of stats from UK whitegoods, and go from there and let you know. One thing is I don’t give up . Thanks again.
