hotpoint aquarius fdal11010 dishwasher salt

we have replaced our old dishwasher with a hotpoint aquarius fdal11010 it always leaves a chalky residue on crockery it has salt and rinse aid in it. i cannot adjust the salt level i have looked on the manual and it gives instructions to turn it on turn it off hold pause button for 3 seconds turn dial ect but nothing happens can someone please help me . many thanks

It should then give you the option of selecting between 1 and 5 as per the hardness chart (see below). Does it not show any number in the window then?
