ParticipantHi,
I’m new to this site, but hopefully someone will be able to explain where I have gone wrong with my tumble dryer repair.
I recently had a metallic knocking started, so searched the internet and found some stuff on youtube regarding repairs to this dryer. I stripped down the unit to see if the fault was as expected, and sure enough the drum shaft had split.
I purchased a replacement shaft and front bearing kit, and fitted this. Great I thought, bit time consuming, but only cost a few pounds. Started dryer and found it now started to rumble as if the drum was rubbing against something rubber. I hadn’t replaced the felt at the front or the back, so thought that must be the issue.
I purchased another kit with all the parts (considering the addition of a further shaft and bearing kit a good purchase for the future and a learning point). I stripped the dryer, taking more care this time, and replaced all the felt seals front and back. Ensured all was put back together properly, and off we go!!!
🙁 still got the rumbling sound, as if the drum is rubbing on something rubber. Put a small load in and the drum doesn’t turn!
The belt looks fine, but perhaps this is worn as it was quite easy to fit by hand without a ‘special tool’, could it simply be this I need to replace, or have I messed up when fitting the new parts and caused the drum to be sticking somewhere?
Thanks for any responses.

A new stretch belt (9 rib) is must. But these dryers are built much like an old biscuit tin and unless the frame is aligned it will grind, rumble and rattle like a Centurian tank on an assault course during war games!

Martin,
Thanks for the response.
I purchased a new belt today and fitted it this evening, much tighter than the old one, I had to use a metal tube to persuade it to go on, but I got it there without too much effort.
Well I thought this would be it, but unfortunatley the noise continued, I couldn’t work out which area it was coming from (front or back), but then the drum stopped turning and I got an electrical burning smell.
Well I’ll now either have to go to a proffesional to get my botch job put right, or I’m looking for a new dryer.

I’d take the latter option if I were you. 😉
