    Hi,
I have a problem with my washing machine tripping the electrics as soon as I shut the door. Plugging the machine in with the door open puts the power on light on. Then as soon as I shut the door, the earth leakage circuit breaker in the consumer unit trips out. Machine is not in cycle, so shouldn’t attempting to start anything up, or even lock the door, when I shut the door? If I plug it in with the door shut it trips immediately. Buttons on the front still work – power off/on, start/stop cycle, just trips when I shut the door. Is it likely to be the door switch? I’ve took it off and there are 3 pins on it, 2 of which are permanently shorted out and the third one is open circuit to the other 2, regardless of whether I make or break the switch by hand. Switch is dry and looks ok, wiring looks ok.
Or is it more likely to be something fed from the switch? Any advice please?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

Certainly will be the door lock. You need one of these:

Stop trying to make it go; you will blow the computer board.

    Power off, when fiting.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
Dug a bit further though now its daylight. Have found that if I unplug the cables (9 way plug) from the main board at the bottom left of the machine, to the motor. Then when I operate the doorswitch, it doesn’t trip the RCD. Is there something on the motor that’s made live when the door is closed, which might have an earth fault?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

I also have a WD440 and it has been fine until the weekend and it too has started tripping my RCD switch on the fuse box.

The machine starts to work a normal cycle ok but then suddenly all the electric trips out.

Is this a problem with the machine or should I get my electrics looked at?

I’m no engineer and typically my one year wearranty ran out last month!

    Any advice? ❓

Sounds like the machine has developed a fault, maybe the heater gone AWOL or the motor? Best get it looked at, bearing in mind it is covered by a 5yr parts warranty and you need to contact Hotpoint direct for that. 🙁

I fixed mine (sort of). I disconnected the heater element on the drier section (after a process of elimination) and it works ok now as a washer. Very rarely used it as a drier anyway. Why it only tripped when I shut the door, I don’t know. I presume shutting the door puts power onto other parts of washer. Just need a new drier heater now.
